Anyone applied for disability before?
My Dr. says to apply for disability since my medical UI is running out and i`m not ready to go back to work for quite awhile.
he wants me to apply for long term, but I figure short term would be better.
Anyone have any expertise in applying or filling out papers and stuff? I have no idea where to start.
Thanks Ty

I was on short term from my company for my operation and it was pretty easy. Your work should have the all the paperwork and you just need to take it to your doctor and he fills it out. Then you take it back to your work and they send it to your benifits people. They take a week or two and then if they approve, they send you weekly checks! It was pretty easy for me anyway.

Problem is this wasnt a work based accident rather a home based boo boo. Medical UI is what I have, basically Med leave.
UI wont extend my claim unless I am ready and WILLING to work. Well I am more than willing (just to get out of the house), but the ready part just isnt there yet.
I was thinking more along the likes of Government based disability.
I do know a few people that are on it, but I dont really want to talk with someone that scammed the system. I plan on going back to work no matter what the Dr. Says. I dont want to be on handouts cause I feel as long as I can blink my eyes, I can work if you know what I mean.
Thanks for the replies guys

It doesn't matter if it happened outside of work you can still get coverage if your employer provides benefits to you. Hell I know a guy that got in fight and broke a hand, then got short term disability from work. You should NOT feel ashamed, you pay the insurance company for that and you should use it. If you have benefits from your employer that cover short term/long term disability then USE them. Contact your HR person and they will help you fill out the forms. You can only expect about 60% of normal wages from what I understand. If your Dr. says not to go back, then I don't see why you would. Hope you get better!

Benefits from my employer? Ya, you gotta be kidding. No such benefits of any kind. Nice of a guy that works you 16+ hour days 6 days a week.
I have calls into damn near every place here in town and no call backs in a week. Looks like I am getting ahold of my employer Monday and going back.

Go down to the UI office.
My gf had a shoulder injury, work related.
Then WCB decides one day that it was no longer a work injury-after 1year of rehab. Her disability plan at work denied her because it was obvoiusly a work injury.
So we ended up going to the UI office an aplying for that. Not sure exactly what she did, but I will find out later...
