Speakers

I hope someone can help me. I havent installed a car stereo since I was a teenager. I've just bought a 1987 Chev van style moterhome and the stereo was not working when I got it. the seller had purchased a new one and threw it in with the deal. There was no wiring diagram with this "Pioneer" unit. anyway I got the power hooked up ok and spliced in the front dash speakers and they worked. I then turned off the unit and turned it back on. there was no sound until I pulled the splices on the speakers apart and respliced them together again. The speakers work, until I turn off the power again same thing over again.

Has anyone got any idea what is going on.

Thanks in advance

Hmm do you have all the wires hooked up? Usually Red/Yellow are + black -
and paired colours goto the speakers (black stripe indicating negative terminal).
Try ohming out the speakers to make sure they read 4ohms or so. A bad speaker may be causing the circuitry to stop responding in the headunit.
Make sure all your contacts are solid and not wrapped with tape. Crimp or solder.
That is pretty much all that comes to mind other than he threw in a headunit that he knows doesn't work.

Thanks for the tip regarding the speakers. I'll try it. as far power connection is concerned I do have it hookedup as you stated (red and yellow are + black is -) but it took me a few tries to figure that out.(as there was no wiring diagram in the box.) Is it possible I somehow damaged the unit. I'll also let you know that there are 3 pairs of wires to be used for the speakers.

Thanks again for the help.

Yellow is permanent power, red is only on when the key is in the ignition.
I suppose if you hooked power to the speaker wires it would be a bad thing. It is possible it is damaged.

3 pairs of wires for the speakers.... that doesn't sound right... usually the wire colours are purple/purple black, green/green black, white/whiteblack and I believe blue/blue black but for some reason blue isn't sounding right because it's usually remote power. Orange is usually power antenna.

Is the Pioneer deck a really old one? Single row of wires in a white harness? Like in this pic?:

well if your wiring is all GM factory, this is what you needs to do, yellow wire from Pioneer deck to orange wire in van, red wire from deck to yellow in van(there are two yellow wires make sure you find the one with power), black to black, white to brown, white / black to gray (there are two gray wires back there in the van, ones for dashlights the other one is for the speaker, make sure you get the right wire) gray wire from deck to light green, gray/black to dark green, green wire from deck to brown, green/black to yellow, purple to dark blue, purple/ black to light blue
