So I drove into work this morning, tunes loud but not "pumping" loud. All was fine. Parked on the driveway at the shop, and decided to adjust my 6x9 crossovers a bit.

Still with the music loud but not pumping loud, my sub died. No smoke, no pops, no stink, no nothing, it just stopped working.

And yup, it's dead. Both voice coils are reading open. The cone still has full travel with no scraping even, "no signs of abuse".

So I took it to my stereo dude, and he'll send it off to Orion for service. I've owned it 11 months, dunno how long the warranty is/was and dunno if it's cooked from me abusing it or not... Told him that if they want any money for a reconing, to just give me an estimate before they start any work. If I gotta pay money, I may want to upgrade to a 15 incher or something...

Or, it's a $640 sub, if it's gonna cost hundreds of dollars to fix, I might be better off getting two cheaper subs to run off my amp... I dunno...

*sigh* Been a helluva 2005 already... What next?

Oh by the way, how does one fry a 2000w RMS (2500w peak) sub with only a 1200 watt amp pushing it at 1 ohm? I thought I'd be safe from this when I chose the 1200D instead of the bigass 2500D... "Oh don't sell me that 2500D Tom, I'll just wreck something!"

Ya Bob that was the damnedest thing. Never seen a sub that still looks good, and still moves good, but doesn't work. Tough luck I guess. They should fix it under warrenty.

I can loan you one of my Vifas if you want it, to hold you over until you get your next sub. I have two, whereas I only need one for daily driving.
Besides, my 6.5" subs should be ready soon. PM me if you want, I'll drop one off, whenever I can

Nah... I got it covered

So in my "piles o' junk" at the shop, I had two Alpine 10 inch 8 ohm subs in a pickup truck box, and an empty dual 10 inch bandpass box...

One of the subs had a cracked cone, so I mixed up some epoxy and let'er have it. Screwed 'em into the bandpass box and hooked 'er up to the Orion

Now, if I can just contain myself a bit and not roast 'em over the next week, maybe I'll put 'em in my wife's car afterwards...

Lucky me? Maybe!

Finally talked to Directed today. My sub is en route to them, and the dude said it'll be replaced under warranty.

Note that he said replaced, not repaired.

"You're going to replace it instead of repair it? So could I maybe upgrade to an H2 15.2 15 inch sub?" I asked.

"Well sure!"
