Because I only install one day a week, I keep my stuff in a single mobile box:

#0, #1, #2 Phillips
#0, #1, #2 Flat
#1, #2 Robertson
Skewdriver kit with bits
Klein wire crimpers - do NOT skimp on this tool
Klein wire strippers - again, do NOT skimp
Needlenose pliers
Slipjoint pliers
Panel tool
Pick set
Small SAE and Metric socket set
SAE and Metric Hex keys - I like the flipout sets
Torx set, either a flipout set or at the very least a #15, #20, #25
Multimeter - digital ones can be had for less than $30
Small flashlight - miniMag or LED

Optional but well worth it:
Snap-on Ratcheting screwdriver
Door handle e-clip tool
Ford, VW, Euro tools
Drill bits and Unibits

Most shops will provide a drill, but not drill bits, and other light electric/pneumatic handtools.

Whatever works. The handiest soldering irons are butane I think... Small and effective

As in one that connects to the 12V socket in a car? Why not use a 12V converter instead?

I found a nice Butane one from weller, doubles as a heat gun.

For soldering I use a gun when I have AC and a cheap Weller butane pencil I got at WalMart for like $9 when I have no power. If you intend to use it all the time, get the butane one from SnapOn.

Yep yep. I have a Weller electric that works well, but for jobs where it's tight or I don't have power, the butane works great. Plus, I find the butane heats up larger wires (for remote starters, for example) better than the electric, so they are my dynamic duo of the soldering world lol
