Oh I know there were multi-amp, all active systems. Not that much different from today, but because the relative cost vs. income of most car audio products back then due to their being more quality available IMO it was more common to see 'competition' systems have just a 4 channel amp on a set of 2-way components up front and a 2-channel amp bridged to a sub or two in the back. CD players and trunk-mount processors like an EQ was somewhat exotic then.

Here's some pics from the "1981 CES". featuring Audiomobile demo cars.

Well..... thats still pretty much the same as nowadays. (people still runs 4 channel amp & mono sub amp plus an eq in the trunk to compete). i think one big diff is you have more to choose from now vs then...........

It's so far and few that I see other systems built for SQ these days but the ratio of dollars per RMS watt has dropped a lot I think since those days so you see quite a few more multi-amp systems with electronic processors today or, for the most part, a 1000+ watt class D amp on whatever amount of subs and 'maybe' a small 4-channel on the front 'stage'. Otherwise it's just deck power on a pair of coaxes in the doors. LOL Maybe it isn't so much different than the old days after all. Well, the big change is the ease of getting 1000+ watt amps. It's no big deal anymore to see a car with up to 2000 watts or more. Back then it was huge to see a car over 1000.
