you are totally right, SPL is pointless. But so are many other competative activities that provide absolutely no long term benefits. Like target shooting for example - very expensive, yet very pointless, however, very popular.

I can think of a few situations where an accurate shot would pay off; not so sure about the SPL thing though.

Maybe some day, you may have to... vibrate... something... off of something... Then SPL skillz would totally pay off. Money well spent.

spl isn't dead....yet. it will be soon if we all can't get together and start recruting people. if you roll into a tim hortons and see a bunch of guys sitting around a open trunk with a woofer inside, there probabally talkin' car audio so stop and invite them to the next show. i've done it a number of times and it's worked well, i got a few guys out. the whole thing is this: never make a guy feel stupid, if the guy just spent $500 on a 200 watt system that he's proud of ,telling him he wasted his money will keep him as far away from the scene as possible. get his hopes up with the STREET STOCK catagory and talk him into trying his stuff out. the thing that got me hooked was the people. showing up to a show and having a bunch of guys willing to help you out any way they can shows a love for the sport. i rarely break a 140 and i keep coming back, mostly for the people, it wouldn't be any fun by myself. hopefully the vetrans of the sport will keep it alive for a while, untill it pick's back up again. maybe anyone with over 3000rms should be in a extreme class, get some more rookies back into the sport. i hate to say it but the loud guys in low classes are killing the scene. imo- the import scene WILL die. ontario brought in E.R.A.S.E to take unsafe and modfied cars off the road. anyone with a fart pipe turbo or lowered car is at risk.

SPL as a whole is becoming like a cult of loud guys that have fun with their cars. Say every year the ring leaders (point chasers) drive thousands of miles to meet at the big event (the finals) and battle each other for top spot. Every one will be running commercial branded equipment like (alpine,Pioneer, clarion) heads but their amps and subs will be purchased from the independant shops cause no big box store will sell ya a 3000watt amp for less than $2g. With how the industry is going with all the big boxs taking over with their product that move with the masses. Guys that come out and play once and get beat will not come back but the odd one will because its fun. Everyone rather go home and play with their pets and watch TV than to build a system then to take it apart and redo it for the 5th time to get that db from the car only (cult ) SPL guys would do that. LOL anyways SPL , cool cars ,rice scene was always around just not as huge as before because it was new.....look at interior BC when an event is held ,there are at least 35+ competitor for a single event its because its new to them to come out and show off.....for the big city its kindling down because its alot of work to keep the scores up. Over all SPL will be dead if the small shops are all gone , thats my take

My thoughts are if everyone keeps thinking that its dead or going to stay dead thats whats going to happen i think its up to us (the die hards) to keep it alive and bring more and more noobies to the lanes as the seasons go on i myself have atleast 2 noobies coming out in the spring as well as myself with bigger better gear but thats
just the way i see it lol

1) Rice is just the modern version of what we (I) have been doing on cars for yrs, but today you don't have a SBC that can be pulled in 45 minutes and swapped with a BB which was the de-facto standard of going fast back then. Todays engines are also so optimized with computer management its tough to improve on them anyway unless you stick a blower or turbo on them. The days of throwing a set of headers and a semi hi rise intake with a Holley DP/DF are long gone.

2) Target shooting is different than some other hobbies. Not everyone is going to be good at it. You can go buy a Kimber or a S/A race .45 and still suck hard if you don't have the eye/hand coordination for it.

3) I've been waiting for Linux to go mainstream for 20 years. It ain't gonna happen. Ever. It has made inroads in the server market because of free as in beer, but try to find a Linux admin for less than K. No. Chance.
Linux has always been a solution looking for a problem. It will never grab a share of the desktop market (where the money is). Even DELL has been offering it the last few years here and there without much success. Microsoft has won, get over it.

4) Hobbies are allowed to be pointless. Why does something have to have a point to be useful? I wonder what all their contemporaries though of Plato and Socrates while they were sitting around doing pointless things like thinking?

5) I believe Yuli is right on the "if I cant win I'm not going attitude" but i think it has more to do with money myself. The cost involved to become loud is prohibitive to the average guy in my opinion.

the monetary cost to become loud is minimal in the small classes, that's why those classes are there.

its the attitude really. wanting to win for just showing up.
