12" sub problem.
12" sub problem.
Well I powered up my subs last week in the basement and I have a problem. One of my subs sounded very airy, meaning it sounded like it was hollow. If I pushed on the sub I could feel air coming through the center cone where these little holes sit. The sub is a Cadence 12" sub which is blue in colour which is in a sealed box. I cannot find a model number but I bought them primarily because of the colour but also because I was told Cadence makes good stuff. The other sub does not portray these problems.
Anyways I took the sub out and blew in the back of the magnet where there was this little wire mesh and could feel air coming out of the front of the cone? Is this a big problem or something minor. The last thing I want to do is pump $200 into a sub when I can buy L5's for a good price?
Any idea's on a problem or cause?

It sounds like some kind of defect, or something punctured the sub. There should be no air flow able to move out of the cone. Especially in a sealed box, it will throw off the power handling and will cause it to sound differently from the other of the subs. I'd suggest taking it back if you can.
how hard would it be for them to pull apart the sub and re-glue the cap on the front of hte speaker? The cadence speakers are a little difference, on the front where the cap is there is a accent piece that needs to be removed? would this be an expensive job?
if you look at this pic you can see there is a cone ontop of the dustcap. I am just curious if anyone has any experience with anything like this

The bullet that you are looking at on the subs pictured is not something that can be removed. It it actually an extension of the center magnet itself. A lot of mid bass and some subs are made that way (Clif Designs being one). Just out of curiosity, have you tried reversing the phase on the sub that doesn't sound right ?
put some glue where the air is comming out. If its on the cone. You have to use glue that is good with foam and doesn't give off any gas. I use prestite number 7 I think. I put the glue on one of my subs that had a hole in the surround. Never had to glue it again. Works perfectly now.
