can a head unit drive speakers?
im wondering if it is recommended to use your cd player to drive door speakers? if so can you load up a cd player like you can load up an amp? what can is the power from the cd player rated for? 2x 6.5 or 4x 6.5?
You can drive speakers off a head unit. Thats why there is an amplifier in it although it will only put out about 20 watts per channel and are 4 ohm stable. If you want to drive multiple speakers (especially at a lower resistance) then an external amp is necessary.
I always find it funny when people say not with components.. It's true to a point, but really if you only want to play so loud, and your components are reasonably efficient they can sound pretty good. Yes not as good as those speakers could, and if you've got a big sub system, it won't keep up, but otherwise it sounds pretty good
I ran with a Clarion deck (lets say around 4x18RMS) running Focal 165A1 (about a $500 component set). Had lots of people listen to that setup in my passat and they all figured it had to have an amp in it.
That all said. 90% of 16-25 y.o. males should probably never use deck power in their systems!!
So scampo would have to tell us more about what else he is running, what he expects/listens to etc..
