A dustcap is a dustcap ??

After a 2 hour trip around the area yesterday, I opened the lift gate to check out the gear.
One of the subs had a 3 inch circular condensation "spot" on the dustcap.
I thought it was kinda odd, only one having the spot, then I noticed that the one dustcap that had the "spot" was a paperboard dustcap, the other 2 are plastic..
That leads me to my questions.

The paperboard dustcap I assume let more heat dissapate and its slightly lighter. Does this make for a better performing dustcap/sub? The plastic ones don't break up on the edges over time, but weigh more.

Does it matter? What kinda of dustcap do you use?

what subs are you running?

I can only assume if they are the same make & model one sub is from a different production run.. ?

Pressed paper caps are generally lighter and stronger for a given weight.. and by the sounds of things the coating on your paper cap will allow water to condense on it while the plastic polypropyl ones will not...

different paper caps can have different treatments and coatings, so they are not all equal either...

The subs are frankenwoofers, The first recone I did, was on the sub with the paper dust cover, the next ones I did , I received the plastic caps with the recone kits. Thats the reason for the difference Hainz.

So with the paper ones being lighter, theres a tiny tiny performance
advantage using them over plastic?
Plastic just last longer/looks better (IMO)?

Thanks bro

the only thing that matter is the stronger the material the better.

So then the plastic ones are the best bet Yuli?

Why though? Do the dust caps help hold the cone together to some degree? Make everything a little stiffer?
Just trying to understand the reasoning

if you assume plastic is stronger then i guess it is better.

yah dustcaps help hold the cone together.

what i used to do is double up on the dust cap.

sometimes in SPL when u really push a sub the top part of the former will slam into the back of the dust cap. a weak dustcap will break when this happens, while a stronger one will hold.

Ok.. I guess plastics not the best then huh? There's really only paper or plastic from what I saw.
Uhmmmm..whatta you use?

I guess the thin little line of goop I laid down on the back of the cap to keep the cone goop free, was kinda a SPL NO-NO too .. Thanks bro

there is also carbon fiber.

well we use paper cuz its cheap, just have some spares on hand. we usually double up, that helps.

goop is whatever, it usualy wont hold very well. i recommend only to use good grade CA glue for speaker repairs. you can get away with using gasket maker to fix your surrounds, that's about it. do not put goop or gasket maker on parts of the speaker that are not supposed to flex/bend.
