I've got 2 Alpine Type R 10" subs going in a ~2.45 cubic ft. cylindrical enclosure.

Alpine recommends a displacement of 0.050 cu ft. for one of these subs with it front mounted.

My question is; will too much space dampen the sound quality? What are my options?

 

Too much airspace generally makes a sub sound like a wet fart.

So if I have 2 of these subs, and each requires 0.050 cu. ft of space. I obviously need double the space, right? Oh, it's going in a spare tire enclosure btw, so can I get away with 1 cu ft. space and am I going to notice a big difference in SQ?

 

depends on the sub.. the type-R's can still sound great, but you;ll need a subsonic filter to block some low end so they flop around.

Some subs can sound fantastic in way bigger than reccomended enclosures. Other's will just flop around.

Stuff the enclosure with alot of filler.. even spray foam insulation to take up space.

 

They require more then that for airspace, their displacement is how much they will take up in an enclosure. Minimum 0.50 cu.ft to max 1.25 cu.ft per sub. Also are you going to have them in a ported enclosure or a sealed enclosure?

 

Choose a box type, sealed or ported as they both will have differing recommended sizes and different types of sound. A ported box you will indeed need a subsonic filter on the amp, expect the box to be a little larger as well. Sealed box, nice and easy to make and very forgiving on the sub. A pair of them in a 2 cubic foot box should sound great.

 

For some reason I thought that it was too small going by displacement. That's just my inner noob coming out.

I'm looking to do sealed enclosure, ported sounds too complicated, especially with this type of sub box. I know that there are different sound qualities between ported and sealed. But for now I'm sticking to sealed for simplicity reasons
