Need some help, please.

Hey,

So this is what I basically have.

A ZX650.4 4CH kicker amp, 650W RMS.

A front pair of kicker component speakers ks650.2 I think.

Now I have a JL W3v3-4ohm sub. Handles 250W RMS. The amp can put out 320W RMS. So no overheating which will be nice.

Anyways my amp/speakers are all set up. But I need help connecting the sub to the amp.
Heres my questions.
1. Do I set the sub on a Low Input Level, instead of a High Input Level?
2. Do I use a crossover switch on both the speakers and the sub? Or do I still let the speakers do the mid-bass.
3. What do I do with the fader switch? It says leave it depressed if im running two sets of inputs.

Thanks a lot.

More info please. Factory radio? Aftermarket? RCA interconnects or speaker level?

You want all different-sized drivers handling different frequencies.

On the subs amp, set the high-pass filter to around 80 hz, and the low-pass filter to around 40 hz, this will keep your subwoofer output between 40 hz & 80 hz. Above 60-80 hz is mid-bass, so play around with it to find the sweet spot. What's a fader switch? Does it say fader, or "master/slave"?

Oh okay. I understand now.
It says the Fader switch "Depress the fader switch if you are running two sets of inputs (front and rear for ex.) to the amplifier. Leave the fader switch off if you want to drive all channels from a single stereo input.

1. According to the Kenwood DNX5160 Manual, you have 3 sets of RCAs.

Connect the front outs on the deck to the front channels on the amp and ones marked sub out to connect to the 2 rear channels on the amp. Don't worry about using the Xovers on the amp for now.

2. Use the Xover functions that are built in to the deck to get the system sounding the way you want it to. I usually suggest you start with amp gains set to minimum and any tone controls, bass boost or other EQ functions in the deck or the amp set to off.

The usual starting point for fronts is an 80hz HPF, you may find at higher volume levels they don't like playing lower frequencies and raising the frequency may stop the speaker from distorting. Same thing (almost) for your sub......start at an 80Hz LPF and listen to how it sounds.

Once you have dialed in the system from the deck, if you want to use the amp switches and controls you can......just be careful with things like bass boost *****.......

3. Fader question answered already....

That's a nice setup, I hope you'll do that woofer justice and get a proper box for it..... post some pics while you're doing it as well as the finished product.....

Sub is sooo loud and clean. I love it.
How high could I turn the gain up? My amp would put out 320W RMS. My sub is good to about 250W RMS. So if my gain is around 75-80 percent is that right?

I would suggest not looking at a number but listening to the sub instead....once you have determined the highest volume level you can get out of your front stage, you should be using that volume control setting on your deck to set the gain on the amp channels. Feel free to crank it until you start to hear distortion in the woofer and drop it back a notch.....you may lose a db or 2 but your woofer will thank you for it by lasting longer...
