Question: Does it matter which way the cone is facing (sealed enclosure)

oh, that's different, then my answer is still yes, its a sub box, try every which way possible and secure it where it sounds best, there is way too many variables to say "face it toward the back for best results"

I read a test from another site regarding this question. Basically the conclusion was the subs are louder when firing into the rear of the trunk than facing the seats. The sub was also louder when positioned closer to the end of the car than snugged up against the seatbacks.

It has to do with cancellation, I think we can all agree here. "positioning" the box is simply solving the variable of at what distance to the back of the trunk does it offer less cancellation. We aren't talking SPL here, so a rear facing sub is the solution, it just takes finding a distance that suits the sound you're looking for. If you want someone to hear more bass outside of the car, face it forward and open the windows. If it's about hearing it inside the car, face it backwards, close the windows. And to be clear, by hearing "more bass" I'm referring to not only loudness, but clarity as well

What part of my post could you not understand ? . I answered the OP question with about the only subjective info regarding sub placement. If you have anything useful to add regarding SQ go for it, otherwise STFU.
