I finally got the second sub reconed and tried it out yesterday. There is a problem .

It just didn't sound right (or loud) at higher volumes, my lady said she could here a "chirp" sound and my bro thought he heard a metallic sound ..

So we took it out and checked all the wires,leads etc. No problem there.
Also pressing lightly on the cone doesn't make any "bad" sounds.

The best I can guess is that the coil isn't centered just right. I did use the spacer provided however.
Could being slightly off center be the problem?

If being off center is the prob, how would I go about removing/recentering it? Please tell me I can fix this!!!

Were you extremely careful to clean the pole pc/magnet and bottom of the gap? If there was something in that area, it could also make strange noises.

If it is off-centered there is no way that I know of to remove it without damaging the surround and spider. When you used the spacer was the coil still able to slide easily on the pole pc? If so, it could be off. I know I had to use 3 spacers (sort of snug, but definitely centered though) on one of my TFOnes, but the other I could only get 2 in and still have a little room to slide it.

Unless it was pretty much a snug slip fit, you could be slightly off centered.

Also, is the sub reaching Xmax? Could it be bottoming out on the former?

Thanks for the reply DS. As it turns out, when I soldered the wires onto the poles I left too much of a wire loop above the pole.

Like you mentioned , it wasn't even able the reach xmax.
The cone would contact/stop on the wire/poles when I rechecked during a manual pushing of the cone. That would be why it went wonky at higher volumes, they left some nice scuff marks too..
We never did push it hard during first testing, thanks to remembering to actually listen for problems probably saved the cone!!

We got it resoldered , in box and working now, when we find some time to tune with the local shops computer we'll be ready to rock.

WELL!... glad it was an easy fix.

I know I was really hesitant to recone my subs but after you do it once, its not so bad.

Yeah, for sure DS... The second I start with the adhesive my pulse must jump 30 beats, but it is pretty rewarding after its done. Well, when it works..
I'm hoping I don't need to recone anything else this year!! You either, cross your fingers..lol

As a tip for next time.
When threading the Voice-coil leads (tinsel leads) through the contact points, give them a slight twist, so as to make the tinsel lead swing to the outside in a semi-loop. this will allow enough flex for the woofer to reach X-Max, without the cone touching the leads.

Thanks Eli. I actually had to do it that way.
I needed to trim off the factory solder on the ends of the leads. Then they started to fray, twisting it was the only way I could get it in the post opening.
It worked great , no doubt, cheers.
