shop owners pls help

Hi, I have a simple question here- how do car audio shops provide the power to run the equipment indoors? - in other words how they manage to get hundreds of amps on 12 V DC?....

MR2NR 04-07-2010 01:41 AM

With very large power supplies that cost huge cake.

Yes- and I've just been quoted for 1000 dollars- guys let's be serious I can get a low ripple dc supply that puts out 80amp for 300 bucks and 120 amp one with variable voltage for 500 - and those are scientific power supplies made for expensive laboratory equipment - read overpriced....

MR2NR 04-07-2010 05:25 PM

Yup, they are not cheap for me to purchase either.

pc power supplies,

single 12v rail does 90 amps. though it's $500
Newegg.ca - PC Power and Cooling T12W 1200W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply - Power Supplies

or a 83 amp single 12v rail for $220.
Newegg.ca - ABS Majesty series MJ1100-M Continuous 1100W@50°C ATX12V/EPS12V 80 PLUS GOLD Certified, Single 12V Rail, Modular Flat Cable Design, Active-PFC "Compatible with Core i7, i5" Power Supply - Power Supplies

Yes- thank you for the pricing, and all your help.

The high power PC PS are really expensive due to the size constrains and variable control voltage output that has to be provided at once and the fact that a standard one costs 60 bucks brand new

now I honestly cant believe shop owners pay $1000 for 100amp 12v non-regulated PS- cant imagine a price for those at 500 amp or 1k amp (is it $5.000? or maybe 20k?)... - are they made by JL audio or maybe Morel?

for 200-300 dollars I will be much more happier with a plate amp... this is nuts... I will try make one out of 15amp PC PSs (10 of em in parallel with stud diodes and regulated to match the voltage output) I can get them free at my work as they throw out bunch of them everyday with older pcs but buying one will save me lots of trouble that are prob gonna come up with this sketchy project.... and in a mean while look for industrial power supply

anyone that has information about a reasonable pricing for 12v, 100 amp PS is welcome- no offense MR2NR but whenever you trying to quote me on something you coming up with some crazy numbers....
