How do you listen to a resistor?

so I hate to drudge up an old thread, but I've got another question. Seeing as I'm most likely gonna combine the DMM and by ear methods, I was wondering about HU settings.

Everywhere I see an article or "tutorial" it says that your eq should be set to flat and everything 0'd out. I guess it makes sense, but, to me it makes more sense to set everything the way you want it to be to ensure that when you change the gain on the amp, the subs get that voltage, instead of doing it with a flat curve then tuning the deck and potentially putting more power to your subs than desired.

I dunno, I might be wrong, but it just seems to make more sense to tune things from the head unit and work your way to the amp, instead of the amp, then head unit, then potentially back to the amp.

I used to think the same thing. The reason you do it this way is to allow for headroom when listening to source material that is quieter then what you used to tune it with. For example I tuned my system with everything 0'd out. Most new stuff sounds great with the subs at 0 on the deck. Now if I try to listen to some old 80's Rock and Metal I need to turn up the subs to get the same thump. Some stuff ( old Anvil ) needs to get up to +15 before you can tell there is any sub bass at all. Just my $0.02 P.S. I have always tuned by ear.

hmmm, makes sense, but I just figure with the eq and xovers on my deck set it just makes it easier to tune the sub amp, sending the exact signal I'd be driving around with. is it bad that I was hoping to tune it with sub level at -5? I was gonna do 0, but as good as Pioneer is, they made this deck go from -24 to +6, so I want to make sure there is room to go up if I need it without changing the gain on the amp. Oh well, it worked last time, I'm sure it will work again, as long as I can beat you in Bass Race Nick hahaha
