Why does it have to be a single @ 8ohms? Why can't it be dual 4 ohms in series? What does the RE have to be?

I agree. dual 4 should be the same as single 8 and it's not hard to find one either.

I plan to use the sub in a home theater system. Does it matter if I use a single VC or dual VC? What do you guys recommend?

impedance

Single or dual doesn't really matter - it's the total impedance counts. In other words 4 + 4 = 8 ohms - it's as simple as that. You may wanna check the specs of your home amp as well if it can do 4 ohms too which would make it even better going with dual 2 ohm instead.

My home amp runs 8 ohms.

Ravemeister, you got my attention!! I have (2) 12" JL 12W0 8 ohm subs in my basement home theater. With the proper sized enclosures I built for them, they can really pound out the bass!!

Is this a brand new in box sub?
Thanks,
Anthony

it's not new but in great shape. It's a v1 series.
I can send you a pic if you want.
