8W7 Enclosure

Hi all,

I am thinking about installing a JL 8W7 into the cargo area of my 2006 Matrix. I am going the 8" route in order to save space. I have been told that the 8W7 plays clean with a decent output. I was thinking of building a sealed enclosure out of fibreglass. I was told that it was difficult to build a fibreglass enclosure for this sub.

I am here to ask what you folks think about this sub in terms of SQ and effectiveness - will a single 8W7 play well? I do not want to blow out my windows or distort my vision however I would like to feel a clean punch. Secondly, would building a glass box be difficult for this sub? Finally, would this be the best way to save space in my Matrix? I have 2 children and lots of shopping to do....

Thanks

JJ

Thumbs up

Gotta love the W7s.... Only drawback is the depth of the driver....they are all really beefy speakers.

It's unfortunate JL doesn't make a stealthbox for the Matrix.....most of them use shallower 10" or 12" subs....if space is at a premium and you want to stay with JL, perhaps a single 10W1 or W3 in a small sealed box would do the trick.....in that small a car, it shouldn't take kilowatts of power to get your 'punch' on....

If a regular box doesn't fit your plans, a good shop should be able to make you a fiberglass enclosure that will fit nicely in the rear cargo area without taking up much space....

I was thinking about driving the 8w7 with a 300 to 500 wrms amplifier. I really like the idea behind this 8" as I understand it plays like a good pair of 10" subs. Has anyone heard the 8w7 play in a sealed box? Without actually hearing it myself, I am reluctant to proceed.

Cheers!

I have visited 3 dealers here in the Toronto area. None of these dealers have done a single 8w7, do not have access to a car with a single 8w7 or do not have one installed in a box at their store location. You would think that dealers of a product line would have live samples on display. I understand that they have to keep operating costs down however they are also turning away business.

Thanks

Some times the worst thing you can do with a piece of equipment is demonstrate it to people... Not saying that is the case here but it's true..

I stopped in at Radioactive Burlington today, and there is an 8W7 in one of the JL Hi-Output boxes sitting right in the store....Im sure Lee would be happy to demo it for you.
