Best way to construct 5.25 or 6.5 pod

Hey there guys,

I am picking up a Toyota Aristo in the near future and the stock system has room for 4" speakers only. The thing is they are built in a little plastic pod underneath the door panel.

Here is a picture

Seeing as 4" speakers don't have the power handling I want, (100w @ 4 ohm or 150w @ 2 ohm) per channel. I want to create some type of housing or pod to fit 5.25" or 6.5" speakers.

Wondering the best way I can fit this under neath the door panel.

I was thinking maybe a mdf base so I can screw it into the mounts and then a fiberglass housing. Would a sealed design work well? And what would the best way to get a enclousure that uses the maximum space but still fits under the door panel.

Haven't picked the speakers yet but I am going to be going with a 2 way setup for my mids/highs and its going to be powered off a Alpine MRP600.

Thanks!

It's a first gen mk1 aristo, year 1991.

I was looking to build something to retain the stock look so it fits under the stock door panel. So surface mount pods would be the last resort.

you can buy spacers that only add an inch or so to the to the overall thickness and the can covert the space to a larger size speaker, i changed mine in my altima from 5 inch to 6. worked out great. there available pretty much anywhere.

^ Don't forget to apply fibreglass resin onto the MDF rings so that they aren't affected by water as much. I'd recommend getting the MDF rings+Resin+foam speaker baffles, so that you have a sealed enclosure, with superior waterproofing.

the only thing i disagree with is that with using a mdf ring your doin 3 times the work when you could just use a spacer and caulk it. it has the same result without building a whole new mount.

Very true, it's really up to the OP's choice, if he wants to buy a sheet of MDF or if he wants to buy the spacer.
