big or small spl build
hey guys,
current set up
2 mono amps 900rms each at 2 ohm
2 old skool Kaption SPL series 500rms 4ohm DVC
custom box 5.6cubes slot port 30hz seprerate chamber
HO alt
Kinetik 1800
0g wire
BIG 3
300 amp fuse (over kill i know)
just last year i entered my first comp and fell in love with the scene. ive built plenty of boxes but am really confused whe it comes to spl boxes. i notice more and more people using tiny boxes and large flared ports, where as everything you read about says bigger is better. im still doing solid 142s in my boxes (all about 3-5cubes tuned between 30 and 35hz) which sound amazin.
would i benefit by making a smaller box for competing? lets say 2cubes total, external 6inch ports tuned to 53hz?
any help is appreciated and im sure my wife would be happy to know this will be the last box im building for a while.

its a 97, like i said my low tuned boxes are doing quite well. when im at the comps burping different hz my car peaks at around 47-53hz. im going to start building my box later this week. so far im thinking a 2cube box on the right side of my trunk in a wedge style, one sub facing up and the other slanted facing the front. 2 6inch round ports that ill have to tune at the comp. i think a good place to start is 26inches.

ok here is a good start
3 cubes plus displacement ( for both subs , common chamber)
aim your subs up at the hatch ( assuming its a hatch accent )
using two 4" aeroports 12" long each aim them at the driver side sticking out of the side of the box
this is your cheapest SPL box build
total material cost ( if you build yourself ) will be under $100 and should get fairly loud with the equipment that you already own ( probably around 145's or better depending how much power you get out of your amps)
should peak 48-50hz

wow 3 cubes eh? MTA it sounds to me like your sayin built a cube box, not slanted. is this right
edit. just measured my foot print and i only have 21depth, cant make both subs shoot up unless i run them left to right(wide) instead of front and back.
