Change box design dimension

As an example, if a sealed box design recommends 24x10x12 (w x h x d), can it be changed to 32x10x9 (to maintain volume) and still offer similar sound characteristics (within some reason)?

Space is tight in one dimension, so I wonder if it's safe to adjust the dimensions (within some reasonable amount).

Thanks!
