Loading

What is it? I've seen it mentioned but have no idea what it is

You can buy some loading at most car audio shops across Canada.

OP - take a home speaker and face it towards a corner in your house. Start 3-4 feet away and, while it is playing a decently bassy tune, move the speaker towards the corner. You should notice an increase in bass as you get closer to the corner. That is loading.

Hatchback cars usually demonstrate great use of loading. Open the hatch and the bass disappears because now half of the bass radiates out through the hatch. Close the hatch and all of the bass that was going out the window is now reflected towards the listener.

You can get a similar effect in a truck if you have a vented enclosure by facing the vent into the corner of the cab.

so if I have a ported box and do not have it loaded properly, what r the chances my sub will get wrecked

That's hard to say. Some people can break anything.

Most speakers will give you lots of notice that they aren't happy.
