I was working with granit making counter tops and have unlimited access to that stuff so i was going to build an enclosure but it would be so hard for the tranny on the car to lug the box around. It would not flex at all , it cost near to nothing for me , < too heavy to drive anywhere with it but you can try if you like imo would be way better than steel

I think weight would be the main issue...A decent size box made out of 1/2 inch steel would be at least 600 pounds...

are you guys crazy?!?!?! first stainless steel does NOT stain!!, second you would only need to use at least 10awg no more than 6awg steel to make a box work for you there is NO chance in hell that a box made out of 10awg steel is gonna flex one bit unless its 10 cubic feet, third as long as you weld the box air tight (which isnt hard) it will sound like a fog horn, which if you have heard some of the huge hitting spl vehicles, they sound like a fog horn, so if you can do it try it I bet you will be surprised how well it will work, I work at a metal shop and this has been discussed many times by some of the veterns there that have been doing metal work for 25-30 years and they think it would work just fine

You underestimate the pressure inside a SPL box. I work for a steel distributor and handle plate and sheet all day. If you were to make a box out of 10 ga it would be horriblly unsolid. You should talk to a few Europeans who have built steel boxes, they will tell you what you need in order for it not to flex.

ok but about last month I was talking to killerklown on msn about this topic so we made a 2 cubicfoot box out of 10 awg metal at my work to test the theory of how strong it would be and lets just say that once it was done not even a fork lift pushing down on the with all its torque could not flex the steel, so Im sure that the pressure inside the box would not flex it enough to make any kind of noticeable difference and if it did it would be very minimal, so in that caes you just weld in supports, either way a metal a box will be stronger than any wood box someone could build, might not work as good for spl but who knows? I would put money on that it would, but I dont have the money to dump into a project like that

SEe I saw, 8ga ss wouldn't flex, it is very strong! 10, kind of iffey, and well, 6 I think is overkill! But I don't think it would carry the same transfer that a wood box does give, Everyone says Flex Kills, well SS in a thick enough gauge doesn't flex very easily! I say someone should do some comparitive testing with a termlab, and post up results as I see this being one of the ONLY ways to end an argument! I would be more then willingly intrigued to do such a read!
The only MAJOR downfall I see, would be porting, Because the air transfer comes @ such a great force, that I could see the metal vibrating under this, and maybe even heating up a bit? lol..I want to see this in action now :P

my question is WHY?

i got one right here. there is no diff whatsoever between a metal and properly built wooden box.

There is no difference at all? Weight differences? sound difference?

Use 10gauge steel and bat-crazy bracing. It's possible to do a metal box, just not efficient.
