obcon box with 42hz tuned slot, ned help to tune down to 32 to 35
I ordered a wrangler obcon box, and stupid me didnt ask what it was tuned to, i just "assumed" , never assume, that it would be tuned in the 35hz area, but no, for some strange reason, i dont understand, they tune them to 42 hz
, anyway, i do not like the sound at all, coming from a small sealed box with a single 12" going to a large (well alot larger 1.25 per sub) ported downfiring dual 10" box, i figured i would be impressed, honestly, i am considering putting the single 12" back in, but after spending $$$ on 2 type r 10's , I would like to try to get this box tuned down to 35 at least without tearing it apart, its a big single slot in the face of the box , which is on the bottom, where the subs are, but the way there slots are made is like a s chamber is the best way i can describe it, each chamber ports into one slot and each chamber has 2 baffles to make this port, if you understand where i am coming from
I was wondering if i glued MDF to the baffles to shrink down the slot size, how much would I shrink them, do i measure the space and reduce it by 20% because i want to go 20% lower in tuning?
OR should i burn the box and order another brand that is tuned to 35 ,
I think i should attempt to tune it down ,
any ideas
thanks
and sorry for the messy , confusing post

yeah, the simplest way to lower the tuning is to add volume...luckily for you, you can do this virtually by adding 1-1.5 lbs of polyfill stuffing/cubic feet...so in your case 2.5-3.75 lbs of polyfill will effectively increase the box volume by 25-30%. This will reduce your tuning to around 37 hz. The polyfill also reduces internal reflections and reduces box resonance and can improve sound quality. Anyway, it's cheap and easy to try. Go to any fabric store and get a couple of bags and stuff away, try to keep the loose stuff away from the port opening as it can get blown out...some mesh stapled over the port opening inside the box will prevent any stuffing from coming out if it's a problem. I've been using polyfill for about 20-25 years now and it has always improved my box's sound quality, and I've done my own testing to validate the article linked below...it's quite accurate. Read this article it will explain how it works.

Im gonna hit up fabricville today and grab a bag of fibre fill
what about also shrinking the port size by gluing mdf to the baffles,
I believe that the box manufacture should be able to tell me how much to shrink it by to lower the tuning?
I am also gonna stuff it as well, the box came with sheets of a poly type stuff as well , so i can put in the fibre, and lay the sheet over top of it and staple the sheet in to keep the fill from laying on back of sub and shooting out port, because its a downfiring box, the fill will just want to lay on back of sub if ya folow me

well if you can measure the port dimensions, the tuning is pretty easy to find out using any number of port calculators out there. I would avoid reducing the port area though, as this could cause port noise problems. You may be able to extend the length though, which will lower your tuning.
Not sure how I would accomplish that
the guy at obcon told me its closer to 38 or 39hz with a type r
not sure how the type of sub will change what the box is tuned to, this is new to me, and also tried to tell me a 35hz port for a 10" is a waste of time, that the 10 wont hit that low?? also news to me
maybee i am better off just sealing it and stuffing it and changing it to a sealed box, alot easier
screwing with this slot to try to tune it will be a pain, if it truly is 38 or 39 the poly fibre(got 4 lbs) will bring it to the 35 area then, i will definitely try stuffing it before i seal it
gonna give it a go now
also another thing to consider, the subs are not broke in at all yet, and also not sounding as good as they will yet, i was also told type r need the breakin bad to get full sound more so than some other subs, they are stiff with that surround they use when new, also maybe a farce but makes a little sense i guess
thanks

yeah the 10's seem stiffer than my 12 even, I just stuffed one side and came back in house to get the amount again from that article , the box came with poly sheeting ,, so i will lay it over the poly fill to keep it together
also, i had to build mdf spacers because the type r wouldn't fit into the box all the way, this wouldn't negatively affect sound would it,?? i mean , it would increase available airspace if anything wouldn't it
by very little mind you, but an increase none the less
I will try it ported with the stuffing, but this is my first ported box, and i have had a half dozen different sealed boxes over the years some small , some big, mostly have run jeeps and trucks so smaller boxes , was why i always had to stay sealed, this is the sound i am used to, but when i have heard ported boxes others have had, i remember being envious of there sound at times, so i am just a a hard one to satisfy as well, but break in time in necessary for sure
I remeber a dakota i had with a tiny sealed truck box with 2 10" PG x-maxx's i had, we had to build spacers to fit them into the box. poweered by xs 2500 pg amp, and man , it rattled your eyeballs , but it was hard against bench seat , and you could see your stomach move
i also apologize for my rambling, un professional posts, but its my style also i guess
thanks for the help though
I will post my results,
on a question of crossover setting as well with ported, how do you set the crossover, and should i use the one on deck( kenwood ipod 700) its got a nice crossover settin that goes down to 30 with slope settings, or set it to through. Or would I use my amp crossover on the hifonics amp, which goes to 30 as well i believe, and where abouts should i be looking to set it

no worries about professional postings...lol...this ain't the Queen's board. As far as the cross overs, I'd use the one that's most versatile and turn the other off (you can get some weird slopes and other stuff happening when you mix them). If the deck's is good, that's what I'd use as it's easier to tune from the driver's seat. Settings...start at 100hz low pass with a 12 db/oct slope and adjust slope and cutoff down from there if needed. Use an infrasonic (subsonic) filter at about 30-32hz (just below tuning) set at max slope to prevent over excursion and to tighten up the lower octave. Not sure what you listen to, but most music contains little info below 30hz anyway, and I've found a slightly higher filter (28-32 hz) makes my music sound cleaner, tighter, and deliver much better impact.
ok
first off im a gangster rap lover first, dont flame me, and some metal and classic rock, the rap is the reason for being so fussy it seems to be hard to get a good pounding without the low stuff, which kinda dissapoints me i had to go to 10's to fit 2 subs
im still thinking on the custom box and think i found a local who does it , and will fit 2 x 12 in the future i bet
I packed about 1.25 to 1.5 of fiber then the poly sheet on top,
the kenwood deck crossover seems nice, but no subsonic filter, i am using a pg bass cube though, with the q select on low and other setting on track i beleive, was using fixed for sealed, i have to double check that, it has a frequency dial as well, and i can adjust the boost frequency from seat
i tried it out and right away i could hear the difference, then listening more i noticed notes in the lower frequency i was missing last night or were so low they were not heard really, so now i think its a matter of break in and fine tune the poly a little more ,maybe in a few days, i will get alot of hours on them the next couple days and will leave them playing a little on low when workin around yard etc, i live in a private rural setting. Im not sure i could fine tune tham anymore without the breakin to be sure they are playing all they can play
anyway, gotta run to daughters birthday , and willl drop in tonight when i return
thanks again
