Plexiglass anyone??

does anybody have experience building a box out of plexiglass?

ive been considering the idea, since a friend of mine mentioned to me that he has a few sheets of 3/4" plexiglass. my sub has a nice looking magnet, and i wouldnt mind showing it off.

i was reserching it, but theres not too much info on the subject. it seems like the joints will have to be fused together using some kind of acrylic. Not screwed together.

has anybody tackled a project like this? and maybe can offer some tips?? should i even bother doing it? i already have a perfect box that i love....

We use a lot of Plexi-glass as well as Lexan and other forms of plastic. Acrylic can be welded together for a superior bond and for a fantastic look. The tough part is to create a perfect edge before you glue it.

That's how I constructed my port in my box. I used a 1.5" piece of plexi for the top of my box and 3/4" for the port. It looks really impressive and sounds beautiful. It doesn't flex at all and takes all the abuse that my DD's can throw.

Pics? Im suddenly considering a box with some plexiglass myself. I like the idea of showing the magnets, but i dont like the idea of inverting my subs, so plexiglass is perfect. How bad is the pricing on plexiglass that thick. I had always assumed it would be expensive. I just got some Fi SSD's yesterday and want to build a box today yet, so i might just go get some plexiglass and get this done.

The 1.5" was over $500.00 for 32" x 36". But you're right. The motors look very sexy!

I don't have any pictures on this computer. I'll try to remember to upload them when I get to work.

Good luck on the build.

Im thinkin of just using MDF like i normally do, but then leave a space somewhere on the box to put plexiglass to see the motors. Makes me wish i had a hatch so it could always be seen. hehe

Would 3/4" plexiglass work alright?

Edit: oops, forgot to mention the plexiglass piece would be about 12" x 24"

3/4" should be fine, but it depends on how large of a span it will flank.

weld 45 dries yellow, methl cloride dries clear but doesn't tend to work that well with lexan...and I'm pretty sure lexan isn't sold in clear...could be wrong though...if anybody's in ottawa check out laird's plastic...off cuts are usually pretty cheap.
