Question Sealed Box Sizes

========== I asked this on caraudio.com forums ==========

I am confused on this subject...

Enclosure sizes for subs are always between two numbers. For example, I just purchased two Kicker CVR's and the recommended sealed enclosure size is 1.8 to 5.2 cubic feet for each subwoofer. What would the difference be if I made it 1.8 cu feet (per sub) compared to 5.2 cu feet (per sub). Would it hit harder with a bigger box or what is going on with that?

========== One dude replied and said this ==========

I think....

For those kinds of subs you just basically make a sealed box as big as you can fit.

========== _ ==========

Does any one agree with this???? Cuz I got the whole trunk of my suv to work with and I could easily double the recomended air space. And could anyone else answer this question: whats the difference between a small (sealed) airspace compared to a large airspace? Sq? Loudness?

If I did make a large box I am thinking of going with 18" height x 24" depth x 48" width. This isn't to much over the recomended box size but I have never made a box this big and I am guessing that I would need a lot of support on the inside to reduce flexing. Am I right?

that box is 12 cubic feet. what size subs did you say they were? A smaller sealed box would give you tighter bass. depends on the kind of bass you want for the size and type of box you have to make.

should be alright, you'll have lots of bass. proper size ports in that box and you'll have more bass that you can use.

go with a ported box and yes you will need a lot of bracing

Thumbs up Kicker says....:)

According to this page: Kicker CVR Specs, those drivers will work really well in a ported box just a little larger than the dimensions you listed. The net volume on that box, assuming it's made from 3/4" MDF, is 9.90cuft. If you can make it a little deeper, enough to compensate for the displacement of the drivers, the port and some bracing, you will be getting, according to Kicker, as much bass as you can from those subs.

You can go with a smaller box, either sealed or ported, but there are trade-offs in terms of low frequency extension and power handling by doing so. If you're driving an SUV, why not go for the killer enclosure??...

When you say killer enclosure do you mean a ported box? Cuz I took out my spare tire so that I had enough room to do what ever I want and I want this install to be awesome. If you do mean that I should build a ported box would you (or anyone else) be able to show me a link or give me some tips on how to create them? I mean, I don't know what frequency I should tune the box to and even if I did I don't have the slightest clue on how to make a box that is "tuned" to any certain frequency. So any tips about creating and building a ported box would be greatly apreciated.

Yessir! According to that page, 5.2cubes per driver plus the port volume will make enough bass to make you sick....

No problem....best enclosure tutorials I've seen on the web are here: JL Audio Tutorials .

Between the Kicker page on your subs and the JL pages on putting it together, you should do just fine.....if you can find someone who has done it before to help you with the tricky parts, like handling 49" X 97" sheets of 3/4"MDF on the table saw, you can make yourself a "killer" enclosure....
