Simple clean RE build-With painted box

Hi im new to this site but I did this build for a friend of mine and thought i share because there isn't too many painted box builds. This was done using automotive paint. It took me approximately 2 weeks to complete. The sub used was a RE se-x 12 rated @600w RMS. Powered by Histrionics HFI 1500.1 amplifier witch is a bit over powered but i didn't set the gains too high. This set up went into a 2013 Toyota Corolla.

I used the RE box calculator to get my dimensions for the tune. If I remember correctly i set it at 2 cubic [email protected]

After a couple of days of cutting and mocking up I got to here. Took a bit because i didn't use any wood screws it was all done by wood glue. Clamped each template one by one and used silicone to seal up the inside edges.

I did a quick spray of the port because once sealed its hard to spray the rear of the port.

After the last template was glued i sanded all the edges with a sander and sanding block. It was a pain due to the fact I used a skill saw to make the cuts so my lines weren't perfect haha. But after i sanded the edges flat i applied automotive body filler to all the edges to fill for a smoother look.

I sanded the body filler with 80 grit sand paper and also rounded of the edges with the same sand paper.

To make the primer stick better i added a thin layer of body filler to the whole box. The smoother its applied the less time you'll spend sanding.

After a couple of days sanding the box was finally smooth. IMO not the funnest part of the build lol I used 80 grit to get it fairly smooth and 120 grit to finish it off.

I used this piece of cardboard to that came with the speaker to get a better circle

From here you can use spray can primer just make sure you leave very think coats because mdf wood will adsorb the paint if no primer was used. In my case since i was repainting my front bumper for my car i used automotive primer.

Here's a little extra i did. Sanded with 600 grit and taped off the area to avoid too much over spray. I bought two spray can bottles red/gold and sprayed the area .I"ll post more pics to show what im doing here

After a day of drying I wet sanded the box with 600 grit dry/wet sand paper. Careful not use too much water! Basically wipe off water every time you clean the sand paper in the bucket. I wet sanded because normal dry sanding clogs up 600 grit real easy..Yes i was working on it all night that day and had my bumper to finish up also lol

I sanded the primer till it basically had its own small reflection.

Here's a few things after i sprayed the two spray can colors i bought some printable sticker paper and printed the apple logo on it. I made a cut out of that sheet and put it over the two colors then sanded around it to fade the coats in. Again the spray booths aren't necessary it was just convenient for me cause i was painting my bumper and i used automotive paint.

After i sprayed the base coat i pealed the sticker and this was left behind.

With 3 layers of clear coat

It doesn't have to be extremely perfect because its gonna spend most of its time in a trunk but i couldn't help myself lol here it is after a day of drying i wet sanded the box with 2000 grit and was buffed and polished. Before(left) and after(right) It got rid of the orange peel.

In this step i taped of the box and sprayed flat black to the bottom of the box. also did the same for the port for a final coat.

Soldering wires to speaker terminal and setting it up for final mount.

And here's the amp being mounted

End result!

Any questions/comments much appreciated
