ok, so im currently looking at

H - 16.25
W - 14
D - 18

box volume 1.76053

port width 0.5"
port length 10.302"

tuned at 30hz.

now, is this going to cause major port noise, with it being only 0.5? whats a way around this, if thats the case?

or am i just completly out to lunch?

well, i still want to be able to play some bassy stuff and still have it sound good and loud.

my understanding, is a sealed box wont be very loud when it comes to low frequency bass hits, but, will be very tight, and responsive... correct?

plenty loud with bassy music, usually sounds better doing it too, ported boxes will go louder and sound good doin it, but if u truly want the best of both worlds you should do a sealed box.

well i will try both, but, can anyone tell me if the ported box i quickly designed up will even sound good? with that narrow of a port im afraid it will have too loud of a port noise.

so.. is there a way around this to get the port wider while still maintaining the tuning, in a box this small?

1/2 port with a 12 = waste of wood

Are you using http://www.reaudio.com enclosure program?

thank you, but like i said, im going to build both. If your going to stray me from ported, i suggest you stop now, casue its not going to work, i want to know what i asked. I am going to try both. and im going to alter the ported one later on to try different frequency's till i find what I like best.

now, will a 0.5" port cause too much port noise? do i need to alter something to make it right, or what?

Lightbulb

It's too narrow.....try building the box sealed first.....if you want to try ported later you can always punch a round one in there and try different lengths for different tuning frequencies. Only drawback is the changing enclosure volume due to the port. It can be a pain doing the math but you should be able to find something you like......

alright, thank you, now, when doing a round port, where do i put it to work properly? just anywhere? or is there specific requirements for it, apart from diameter, and length?

Not at all trying to convince you not to do ported, but that narrow a port is likely have alot of noise. I made a slot ported box for a 10" that had a port width of 0.75" and had port noise, = waste of wood and time.

ok, so another question would be. How much of a notice in volume will i notice? im pretty sure sound quality will go up?... but how much volume am i sacrificing.

also, im driving this sub with a 500watt rms amp, the jl500/1v2 at 4 ohms. how much easier/harder will it be to blow it in a sealed box? how can i tell if im pushing it too hard? will i still be able to smell if something is wrong?

sorry for all the questions, im just trying to learn :P
