$1,500 Budget

Sup guys.

This might seem really vague considering most of you peeps are hardcore audiophiles, but I'm just looking for some good advice.

I'm looking at getting a new stereo from my car, but I don't know a thing about Car Audio. Looking for some recommendations and not getting scammed by a retailer.

I drive: 2004 Civic Si

Budget: $1,500 CDN, so obviously not the super high-end stuff

Music Tastes:
  • Drum N Bass
  • HipHop
  • Punk
  • House
  • Jazz
So, pretty bass heavy stuff I guess.

I'm very big into Sound Clarity, not head-turning bass or anything.
Anybody have any ideas on good manufacturers, brands, stores? Is a small audio-specialty store going to give me better stuff for my dollar than say Best Buy? Any help would be appreciated.

First of all, welcome to car audio world.Finding a shop in ottawa that will take good care of you may be harder to find than good equipment. most shops over charge for there basic services, most of the enthusiast run shops have closed or been bought out. There are some awsome installers at the big retailers (B.B and F.S). For $1500 we could make your car sound great if you want to give us a call

Personnally I Agree, JBL Rocks, you can pick up 2 P1024's or 1022's (depending on your amps ohm load req.) for 200$ a piece, get a GTO601.1 for roughly 350.00-400.00, so thats about 800.00, gonna need to get wiring and what not and a god quality box, living in Ottawa i know that Shon makes some sick boxes, he doesnt know me but his rep. preceds his box making skills in Ottawa....those are my suggestions, JBL rocks!...im throwing in one of the P1024's next weekend so i can let u know how they hit

Nothing wrong with big box stores, or small guys (if you get some references). As far as equip goes; I have always used well known, proven, high quality brands such as; Alpine, Pioneer, Clarion, Rockford Fosgate, JBl, Infinity, etc... I have used all these brands, and others, many times in the last 20+ years with excellent results. Now, with a 1500.00 budget, you can get all the same brand or mix and match. I like to use the same brand/model for my mid/high speakers, as I believe it keeps a similar tonal quality between the speaks. Subs you can go with other brands if you want to, but honestly all the brands listed have very good subs as well. As an example a simple set up can be; front components(5.25, 6.5) for about 250-300.00(infinity, JBL), rear fill co-axials for 100-150.00(infintiy, JBL), sub and box for 150-250.00( kicker comp vr+box, or Future shop has a Infinity 1230w and box on special), 6 channel amp for 500.00(JBL gto 755 from smartass), deck for 250-300(Alpine, Pioneer, Clarion), and wiring and install for about 300.00. These are all real world prices which I've plucked from big box stores and "Smartass"'s website at the right side of your screen. Your install should be about 200.00 as you are using all factory locations, and a prefab sub and box. Anyway, I hope that gives you an idea as there are literally thousands of combinations you can go with. For someone like you, with limited car audio experience, I would suggest that you go and see a few retailers and ask a lot of questions.

I would start with a good cd player like the Eclipse CD2000 or CD3000, no need to go higher up the line that either one of these unless you want more bells and whistles. A good set of front and rear speakers are next on the list. After that a sub system is one of the most expensive parts of a system to purchase. Is your budget including taxes and a box or + these things? This will have a major effect on the quality of the system that you purchase. Have the box built for the subwoofer you choose and the vehicle you drive. You can be like the masses and put in a prefab box and hope for the best or install the proper box and know that the sub you purchased, with the amp you purchased is giving you all that it is worth. Once I know whether your budget is inc taxes and a box, I will start to find some good products specific to your application.

I agree.... excellent advice, and the Eclipse line offers extremely clean output right from their entry level to their best model.
