12" kicker L7 Question

hey i just bought a kicker l7 off a guy, subs liike a month old. very new looks mint and plays mint. im running off a rockford t3002 which pushed around 700-800 rms at 1 ohm. when i turn it up the sub smells. i then turn it down and immediately stop playing. but im wondering, my amp isnt overpowering the sub, could it be cause its new the glue is getting burned off? or is it wired wrong?

You are running a 2 channel 50w rms x 2 amp into 1 ohm mono and getting 700-800w rms from it? Are you sure about the model # on this amp?

no man its rated at 680 rms at 2 ohm on birthsheet and runs 795 at 1 ohm. it doesnt seem to underpower it at all. it hammers. just the smell is something that scared me. soon as i smelt something i turned it down. pretty sure no harm was dont still plays perfect just thinking the coil get hot really fast and the glue or something smells? or the kicker box is what smells from the heat..?

Many driver's will emit an odour when heated up the first few times. That include's when I drive after eating anything with curry in it; I tend to emit an odour...............

Anyways, don't worry about it too much as long as everything's been set up properly and you're not overly abusing the driver by playing tones for long periods it should be just dandy.

And yes those T3002's usually come with a birth cert from RF averaging ~600-700.

It could be that the sub is still in it's break-in peroid which would smell due to the fact that the coil is burning off any excess glue and settling into place..

Damn, hardwrkr beat me to it

The Rockford T3002 power amp is not 1ohm mono stable. It is 2ohm mono or 1ohm stereo. Thats not to say that it won't run at 1ohm mono.

You are smelling what is widely known as Kicker smell. When you smell it then just turn it down for a bit.

Maybe the subwoofer fluid level is low. Have it checked out ASAP

that amp is rated for 300 Watts RMS x 1 Bridged at 2ohms (200 watts at 4ohms) CEA 2006 Ratings. Don't think its meant for 1 ohm other than a burp.

If your L7 is dvc 2 ohm and you're wired parallel for a 1 ohm load, then it's probably the amp you smell. If its not frying components yet, its probably the circuit board burning.

Stereo amps are not usually bridgable to 1 ohm, because that would effectively put each channel down to 1/2 ohm, that causes fires.

Good luck with that.
