12's Suggestions for Less Than 1ft^3
Well, I came across these today from an old friend:
I've had ideas for a system shake up for awhile now, going for a cleaner look rather than a huge box that fills the trunk (Even though it produces oh so good SPL
) and something a little more practical for a DD. Anyways, after filling each box with water, I found one to be ~1ft^3, and the other to be ~.85ft^3.
The question is, what subs can I find that sound good in such a small sealed enclosure? I still want some nice thump, basically a decent SQ/SPL mix. is there anything out there that will preform that well in that small of a sealed enclosure? Or will I have to make the boxes a bit bigger? I could probably chop the top off each one and go up, maybe make each one 1.5 cubes. I'll need to keep the power to each sub to around 400W RMS, I've got 3 sub amps here, the Kenwood is what I'm using now, the other 2 have problems, but assumably can be fixed:
-1 x 900W @1ohm or 2ohm, 1 x 500W @ 4ohm (Kenwood KAC-8152D)
-1 x 250W @4 ohms 1 x 500W @2 ohms and 1 x 800W @1 ohm (Concept 800D)
-2 x 150 @4 ohms, 2 x 300 @ 2 ohms, 1 x 500 @4 ohms (US Amps IS2150)
So, should I build out to 1.5, or is there anything in that power range that can perform in what I've got? Thanks

I have a pair of Infinity Kappa 12inchers 4 ohm single vc bnib.. $125 each shipped to you in canada. work well in under a cubic foot..

Alpine type R's have a recommended sealed volume (net) of .85^3ft, RMS 500W and 1500W peak handling. I've just installed 2 in sealed boxes that size. I'm happy with the sound so far. I've got a JBL GTO14001 on them but 400W rms each might do o.k. Just before christmas Best Buy had a misprint on thier web site and sold them for $99 (2+2ohm) but for about $260 each I would be a bit hesitant. Maybe you can find a good deal on them some where.

Zoomer, that sounds great, however I can't buy right at this moment. I'll shoot you a PM when my next check comes in, I'd love to be able to have 2 of those off you, they seem great.
My buget is pretty limited. I'd like to keep the cost of both 12's to around 300, which is basically putting me into the used market, as we all know most new 150$ subs aren't the cream of the crop. Like I said, I do have the ability to go to 1.5 Cubes, maybe even 2 (Have to do some measurements)
Also, with the boxes shown, is there any possible way of porting them? I've been fooling with WinISD but can't really get anywhere with it. I figured I could just calculate the lenth 2" round port for 1.5 cubes to get 34-38Hz, and just mold it in, but then I started thinking about Port noise. Any suggestions? I don't really want to be hovering around 50Hz (What I'm thinking 1 cube sealed will be), which is why I'm trying to find a way to port them.

I actualy have another one in a vented 5 cuft vented box tuned to 19hz for home theatre! these are great subs. retailed for $400 each at future shop.

^^what do you mean? Will it produce 50hz tones? Definitely! Will it be as loud as a ported enclosure tuned to around that frequency with the same speaker? No, but it will deliver more than enough for music listening. I have a type r in a .85 cube box, and it plays tocata in d minor with volume to shake my car and rattle dishes in the house...so more than enough at well below 50hz.
