I have a 2000 Z24 and just took out the old deck and bought a wiring harness for a geo tracker and installed my new deck with that. However, you have to tap into a switched wire (I tapped into the wiper fuse, but lots use the big brown wire in the steering column) to connect to the deck though, as the stock wiring hanress does not have a switched wire. You will only, and i repeat WILL ONLY, lose your door chimes and WITH NO OTHER SIDE EFFECTS. Anyone who says otherwise is ignorant and does not know anything about Cavaliers or Sunfires. 7 flashing airbag lights when the ignition is turned on means everything is working fine ; ).
Check out www.j-body.org and do a search for 2000+ head unit on the audio forum and you will find tonnes of info about the procedure.
And I'm very happy with my deck as well, and no more annoying chimes : ).

This has been discussed at length a few times. Try a search.
Basically: Professional installers recommend one of the proper relocation or substitution kits. For $80 instead of $15 they feel it is money well spent to not have to argue with GM should anything go wrong with the car - related to the stereo or not..
The flip side is Kool's 'guarantee' that nothing will happen. I'm sure that if you did develop an electrical or airbag problem, related to the stereo or not, that Kool would have your back

The relocation kit was designed as a result of some installer tapping into the air bag wire and setting off this huge rumour that the airbags are run throught he deck.......... This is absolutely not true. It says explicityly in the owners manual that if the the RDS radio is removed and not replaced, that only the chimes will be lost. Take a look at this link and see for yourself. There is a pic of this section of the manual.

FS and BB are the main shops that promote this crap. And why wouldn't they to be honest. Their installers are paid on commission and want to sell something more expensive. But why buy a useless $100 harness when a simple $10 harness will do the same thing. Plus the T harness is a pain in the *** to run to the back since the wiring is all loomed together and very bulky. Do some research on a website that is DEVOTED to Cavaliers and Sunfires and you will find people who are truly knowledgable about this car.
Those who do not have a 2000+ Cav or Sunfire and have not tried this install are just assuming that this stupid rumour is true. Show me some proof it isn't because I have my car as proof, as well as the manual, as well as thousands of j-body owners who have done this mod with NO PROBLEMS. Show me some schematics and real life problems that have happened as a result of this mod. Good luck though because you won't find any. It is all a big rumour.
And as for problems with GM, they can't decline to perform warranty work unless they can prove this lead to a problem.
Sorry for the rant, and I don't want to sound like I am yelling at you Dukk, so please don't take it that way

Duke I realize there is a search and I have already used it thanks
I was hoping to get a reply from someone who has used the harness that has somthing in it so you do not have to relocate the deck but you do not loose your door chimes.
Kool I would normaly just do the geo thing but those chimes save me aleast twice a week when I am half a sleep from leaving my lights on when I get to school.

And Greg, the kit you are talking about includes some relays and wiring to incorporate the chimes back into the system without having to relocate the deck. The kit is fairly expensive though, around the same price as the T harness. I don't know the schematics, but someone posted how to do it yourself with some parts from Radio Shack for like $10 on the JBO website. Buying it as a kit is much easier though.

The cost difference is about $65, not $90.
FS installers do NOT get commission on any parts.
I have installed the relocation harness. Trust me - I would not promote using it if I did not think it had merit. It's a PITA to run and to mount the deck in the back.
BUT - I know that because I did it then the company will back any bull**** liability claims that GM may try to shove on us should their car develop some random electrical problem.
As I have stated before, I personally think that in the Cavalier and Sunfire that there is no great need for the relocation but also I firmly believe that any well paid service manager at any GM shop will use an aftermarket radio to attempt to divorce ALL liability from ANYTHING going wrong with the car from themselves. It's true and it happens.
Also, I don't even want to think of the nightmare that would happen if you got into a head on and your bags never went off (again for no specific reason) and occupants were left crippled or dead and GM and your friendly insurance carrier pointed to the radio as the reason. Bull**** yes. Real life potential nightmare, oh yes.
THAT is why I figure the $65 is well spent. To help minimize potential problems, not with the car, but with the morons we have to potentially deal with when a problem does occur.
