2003 chevy cavalier
I went the cheap route at first then on the second day after it was done I left my lights on by accident (the first time I had ever done it so I guess those chimes really work).
I figured then that the corrct harness is the way to go. $65 and the factory deck fits behind the rear drivers tire well behind the carpet perfectly so you never see it.
Spend the extra cash IMO.

I do it the expensive way because of liability. Not because I am out to rip people off selling things they don't need. When you get a buddy to do your stereo you're pretty much screwed if anything goes wrong, but if you pay a shop, the shop is screwed when anything goes wrong. For example in the last case above my post all that happened is the lights were left on causing the battery to go dead. But now that battery will only charge up to half it's original capacity. Leave the lights on and it will only charge up to 1/4 it's original capacity. Now I have a customer demanding I buy him a new battery, no thanks.
Do it right the first time.

in a 2000+ Jbody removing the factory deck wont do anything except disable your door chimes. The stereo is completely seperate from everything else, including airbags, DRL's and so forth. The T harness and relocation was done because it retains all the factory specs (ie. door chimes) there is a way to hook up a speaker to your door chimes without having the factory deck, but I can't remember the URL right now, when I find it I will post it as well.
The T harness and relocation isn't needed at all, unless you want to keep your door chimes.
