3-way components
3-way components
I need some advice, I am planning on purchasing a set of 3 way components. I want to put the 6.5 inch woofer in the door, the mid range and tweeter in a Q-Logic Kick panel enclosure. I have a 2004 ford f150 heritage ex-cab . What would be a good amp speaker combo, and is this even a good idea.

fyi: Those speakers $500 BINB condition off ebay. I personally seen a used complete set sell for $250 used and that amp around $300 for a really nice looking one. However $240 ish the the norm.
Another nice amp to look at is the alpine PDX series.
.........any chance of putting the midbass in the kickpanels and getting the midrange/tweeter up in the a-pillar ??? I think you'd be a LOT happier. IT means a little bit of a custom build on the a-pillars........... but........ your stage will be a lot better for it.
Active or passive? If you go active, not only will you need 6 channels of amplification, but you'll also need an active cross-over that's at least a 4-way. It's going to run you some money......... and on that budget, I'd not recommmend it.
For that price, I think going with a passive cross-over setup and a two or four channel amp would get you into a much better pile of gear and the ability to upgrade it in the future is also very achievable (a four channel.... and bridge it to a two channel). For the future upgrade to an actively crossed over system, just add the necessary number of missing amp channels........ for example, if you went with a two channel, then add a four channel to the mix.
There's lots of 3-way systems available out there..... so don't be limiting yourself to the big-box stuff or the mainstream name brands such as Alpine, etc.
For the amp, buy a very nice SQ amp that will match with your components. There's a lot of choice available.

jmo.
Agreed................ but moreso for the mids only. And even still, the width of that cabin hurts the kick panel PLD's too. Personally, I'd rather get them up on the dash and try to make them work there.
The tweeters are more of an angling thing then PLD's............... so up on the a-pillars should not be a problem.
Thanks Paul.......... for making sure I stay honest............ ya bastard

proper location is proper location... experiment on finding the best location for each driver without TA and EQ... then when you add TA and EQ to the mix the amount you need will be less and the result could be magic since it is fine tuning a good build rather than compensating for an unoptimized build
Your build budget is generous as long as you keep it simple, if you get fancy then fabrication will whittle away the $ fast. The 3 way set up you describe could work but keep an open mind.
At CES this year I saw customized A pillars for a couple makes of oriental cars with pods for a tweeter and mid (like gage pods but sized for audio drivers)... a great plan if it works!

Tom - I know you know what you're talking about. I'm just trying to caution people that grabbing the latest trend and jamming the drivers up high does often come with the sometimes not so evident processing to make it work out.
Maybe it's just me but I haven't heard a decent A-pillar mid car that didn't have a bucket of processing in it but I have heard a bunch of decent KP mid cars with none at all (like mine
) I certainly am not the authority on this though.
For sure like JohnVroom said though - each car/speaker/owner combo will likely result in some thing different.
