What size hard drive are u using? Your deck can't make sense/folders for really large drives.
Does yor drive have any other info on it? Pictures, data files, movies etc. This can also cause your deck to have trouble making files.
Some decks do have preferences to brand of thumb drive. Kingston seems to work in everything I've tried. I run an Ida-x100 with a different brand USB(don't remember which) and sometimes it "skips" where as my Kingston never does. Kingston seems to work in all JVCs I've tried where as some others don't.

That drive is way to big. (that's what she said)lol. Even if the alpine could make sense of it there would be like a 20 min window of no music while it was making files. Do you really need 10million songs at your fingertips? How much music do u actually have and do u listen to it all. I'd suggest get a 8 or 16 gig drive for each of your music genres if you really need 3 months worth of non stop music.

Yeah 500 gb is just too much for in car use...a nice 60-80 gb ipod is more than enough to store 2500-3500 lossless tracks. Have you read your manual and organized the files as per the instructions? Alpine has a whole section on that.
