The HU will only read the device if it's formatted a certain way. I think it wants FAT32, not NTFS or exFAT. There's probably other formatting types but that give you a place to start. Check Alpines Manuals........................................... ........................

My manual (ida-x305) says the USB device can only search file/folders up to the 8th hierarchy. The 9th and subsequent cannot be searched and played back...................
Limitation is also 10,000 files/1000 folders............................This device supports FAT 12/16/32...........

That's what my manual says. Your's is probably pretty close.

To find out how you portable HDD is formatted plug it in to your pc, open "My Computer" and right click on your HDD. Scroll down and left click "Format..." in the menu. A window should pop up, have a look to see what it says under "File System".

^does it only happen with the hard drive as the source? Make sure it's not happening with the tuner, or ipod or memory card plugged in. If it's only with the HD, make sure it's not the drive, then look for other causes like loose connections, rca cables, bad ground, speaker connections etc..(you can check all that first as well).

My old Kingston stick works flawlessly where as my new one has the same issue. That's what I meant earlier when I said some units prefer one brand to another. I don't know whether it's the speed of file transfer or what.
