Amp for an APX 12?

What do you reccommend to power an APX 12 in a ported box for daily? I had a Visonik V900XD pushing it. Budget is $350, the only amp I've found to my liking is a BNIB Hifonics BXI2008D for $320 total. Does distortion etc happen because of the amp being pushed hard or because the woofer is at it's limits? Do you get better results with more power and less gain? Just how much power can I send to an APX without problems? Goal is louder I suppose. Thanks, will be buying today.

Also I don't know what happened to the Visonik amp, I took it out, put it back in, and it didn't turn on, it hotboxed my car and got red hot. Ground and battfuse are fine. I don't want to buy an amp and have the same crap happen LOL!
