Well I would hope the thing doesn't blow if it's just been sitting in your closet!

Well.. unless it's a D2. Then you're just lucky.

Well like you said it is totally in the application. For example i have four mtx 1501d's they were used in a spl vehicle loaded to one ohm (below their reconmended load) and fed 14.4 volts and they are still going strong. That's been a 8 months used twice weekly.
As for daily i have my original daily amp which is a mtx 81000d. I had two but sold one both were ran at 2 ohms at about three quarters gain with a stock electrical system. Both amps are still kickin now three years total. Same as my mtx thunder 6304 4 channel.
However all is not good in audio land. I had an alpine mrv t-500 running two twelves at four ohm mono and it crapped out after 6 months. It melted fuses and all. Also had a kenwood kac-729s crap out on me running a single twelve after a year.
It's all user application, by the way the alpine and kenwood were second hand. Everything i've bought myself that i have been the original owner has been good to me
Thats cool that they can take a beating.

what were you running your 1501's on, and why did you run them into 1ohm instead of the recommended 2ohm?

just interested as I own one also?
</font>
i ran them on a few things at one ohm were on a one ohm quad voice coil woofer. I also ran a pair of thunder 8000 dual four ohm coils on one. Those subs are pretty tough i must say. I dunno a shop here said it could be done and i know the rep for mtx here. So if i blew it they said they would warantee it so i did and it took it.

I was under the impression that an amp, if used correctly, would last for ever.

Or are there componants of a amp that will wear out from normal use?

Heat will cause all electronics to break down, it is not your friend. So depending on how hard you run the amp and the type of heat is created on the circuit board and components, depends on amp life.

I have had no amp die/fry on me yet, and this is what I've used so far:

Sony XM-260G
Sony XM-2100G
Sony XM-3021
PG M50
US Amps 100HC
US Amps USA-300
Alpine MRV-1002 (had RCA connection problem)
Mmats D300HC
RF 500BD

I also have 2 a/d/s PH15 6 channel amps which I understand are around 12 or so years old, and they work perfectly.

I'm not suprised about any of those amps still running except for the Saphire (which wasn't one of PG's finest models that's for sure).
My friends M50 was run less than 1ohm on the left channel for a month and when hooked back up normally the left side output was less than the right.
I have had a fair share of amps and the only one to die on me was the Lanzar 1200d (3 times and not user error).
Still have a pair of "classic" Kenwood amps going strong.
