Amp short

So say you have an amp hooked up with speaker wire in place, and then the + and - for the speakers meet w/o a speaker being there. What happens? A short obviously, but how would I know if I accidentally did this? (assume amp had power.. i dont think deck was on though, so no remote, so amp wouldn't have been on.... but assume it was just for kicks)

I did a similar sort of thing with a walkman a while ago just to see what it would do. The walkman still played, just at a very low volume. Would an actual car amp respond the same way, or is there some protection against this? I'm wondering if I accidentally killed a perfectly good amp because of a silly mistake. Was testing it w/ different wiring and was repeatedly removing ground strap from batt to be safe, but forgot it one time =\

What do you think?

Well a fair amount of amps on the market today actually have short protection, I know both of mine do. What kind (brand/make/model) of amp is it?

The amp in question is an Esoterics Audio E7054, which is basically the same as a Diamond D7054. Diamond bought the design from Esoterics. Hooked it up today and it sounds fine.

Ok well seeing as how I hooked it up and it makes the speakers sing nicely I'll assume that there wasn't a short and that the amp is fine. =P
Phew.
