I mean the whole deal.

Front left, center, and right speakers. Rear left and right, and dedicated sub channel.

Seems there's all this hype about in car surround sound....and nobody is buying it.

We have a customer wanting true 5.1 in his Mercedes, he is picking up one of these from us:

Octane R 5.1 amp, has Dolby Digital and Pro-Logic, doesn't do DTS out though.....

I would have true 5.1 surround if I only had a centre speaker. My receiver has a Dolby Pro-Logic II decoder built in...

It will surely catch on more once we get away from CD's as our prime medium for music listening...since CD can only be recorded in and played in stereo.

False. Dolby Pro-Logic II is able to decode genuine 5.1 sound from your standard stereo source. The question is, is there any point?

Well DPL II can do a good job creating 5.1 from stereo. However, I cannot help but think that surround in your car would be rather distracting!

Perhaps as DVD-Audio and SACD gain popularity, we may see more in car use.

I dont know...does it guess ?.. how true can it be since the source is true stereo?...unlike DVD that can be recorded in true suround sound.

^^ It doesn't really guess...using a very complex set of algorithims it creates the extra channels. . I have not expereienced it in my car, but I use it at home for watching TV. It works very well (much much better than DPL I). With music it can be hit/miss depending on the song.
