AudioControl Sensor?

yeah only problem is the 3055 is really darn expensive so you have to already have one first of all and second thjos units can never be as accurate as a termlab due to the inherant error in the trim pot used to set the sensitivity of the meter (not only error between trim pots but also due to the fact that if you touch it the odds of you getting it back to where it was even with the little click it has are basically zero). it has to be better than the mics though but I still think termlab is king

Please don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to diss you, I'm just curious because I have one coming. To my understanding, and this is only what I've heard, the new sensor is supposed to be extremely durable and accurate. The first versions of the new sensor did have issues with the trim pot in beta testing, but from what I've heard that issue has been corrected in the production model.
I'd really like to hear any info you have on it, it would help me greatly. After speaking with quite a few of the big SPL competitors in the U.S. (Art's Sound Chamber - Bobby Riley, Shaker Turgeon, Mike Bartells, Greg & Cindy Welch), they're all raving about this new AudioControl sensor re: its accuracy and can't wait for it to be used in competition.
I know personally I can't wait for it to get here so I can start playing with it to see what it really does. I think it will be a huge leap forward from the old mike and in my eyes can only be good for the competition industry.

Moe - you already have a 3055 though correct? I would think that anyone with an AC meter would obviously see the benefit of buying the sensor over a complete TermLab setup. I would too.
A question - does TermLab do RTA duty? I assume you would have to at least buy a mic but is the feature there?

Yeah, the RTA feature is there in the old Term Lab and I'm pretty sure it's there in the new one as well, but I'm not sure if the mike comes with it or not... I believe it does.
Yes I do have a 3055, it's out getting upgraded as we speak [img]smile.gif[/img] ! I'm thinking about buying the new SA-3056 as well; with the upgrades on my 3055 I can hook the two together and do head to head competition with simultaneous countdown like Term Lab.
I think the cool part about the new AC sensor is that anyone with a 3055, 3056 and even some of the older 3050's (depends on which series 3050 it is) can get it and it's plug and play! The main thing you have to have in your AC meter is the 180 SPL upgrade; if you have that it's a direct plug in with no headaches.
I'm looking forward to getting the new sensor and do some testing on my own... I've heard nothing but good stuff about it so far (with the exception of the trim pot issue on the prototypes)and I want to try it for myself. And it's not terribly expensive either, I think it's like $400. I'll find out when I get the invoice.

yeah the person I heard it from was Wayne Harris lol. You can use his sensor with the 3055 as well and I am sure it is extremely accurate however I am just saying there will still be interunit variablility due to the trim pot for the sensitivity in the 3055 unit itself...true not nearly as much as there is with the current microphones because with them you have the pot issue and the mic issue but still more then the termlab. But regardless its still a huge step forward from the old microphone system and will be way more accurate I just doubt it will be more accurate then a $600 termlab USB setup (although will have the benefit of better portability)

When you say interunit variability due to the trim pot for the 3055 itself, do you mean the gain adjustment on the face of the unit?
I'm pretty sure the sensor is calibrated to the meter it's being used on, much like the old microphone, so I don't think it will be accurate if a sensor from one meter is used on another.
And the sensitivity control on the meter is always a concern... I know personally I have taken the step to tape that **** when using my meter so there are no issues. By doing that, no one can claim that the gain was "played with" during competition.
All the manufacturers of meters claim theirs is the most "accurate", but in reference to what? What are they comparing it to? Because there are quite a few different meters on the market now (Term Lab, AudioControl, B&K, Linear X, etc...), these manufacturers should get together and choose a "point of reference" to base their accuracy on. If one meter is more accurate than another, that manufacturer should be able to make that claim based on some form of starting or reference point, don't you think?
