When dealing with the high end top models from the various SQ top companies (Focal, MOrel, Dynaudio etc) The isntallation and speaker location will have more of an impact than the specific parts used. Tha being said, I've always been partial to Focal stuff which are very much designed in conjunction with their passive crossovers, so unless your going with funky speaker locations stick with the passve X/O's.

these things are just awsome......
they took the EISA Award for the Best In Car Speaker system against
components worth 10X more
and are nothing short of spectacular with every note...
I put 2 sets of these on my front stage....
even compared to my Focal Utopia's the 660's are showing notes/detail I did not know where in the songs...worth every penny

i doubt you can go wrong with most of the high end lines from dynaudio, morel, Seas, alpine F#1 and yes my sincere recomendation the JBL GTI's posted above. heck if you decide to go passive on the mids and tweets, just go for the JBLs or F#1. if you go fully active, source drivers from scan speak or Seas. but this is all very general... without proper installation and tuning, your ubbber high end speakers can have their SQass handed to them by property installed mid grade equipment... just make sure you save some $$ for the install.

The best advice I can give you as a novice is to do your howework. Start here with the suggestions the members give you and then scour the Internet for everything you can find. Not just owners manuals and specs, but solid reviews by people who know what they're talking about. Its much easer to believe a sound engineer when he says "this sounds great" than it is a 16 year old kid. When it comes to SQ its a different game entirely. The biggest thing I found is that probably 90% or better of the standard market fare is pre-engineered for a particular type of music/volume/listener. And that generally isn't someone interested in SQ. It makes your search more difficult, but the ultimate result of your investment in time and research is a quality you are happy with.
I personally chose Focal, but not their upper end line. I took the time to chose what brands are most often discussed with SQ in mind and then spent a while driving around from shop to shop listening to the various brands and models in their lineups. For my ears, Focal Polyglass is where SQ met budget and thats where I landed. Your budget and your ears are as different from mine as your vehicle is, so what works for me may not be what works for you. When you are done with your "plan" and its time to buy, I've always favored the buy once and buy right theory. Spend the money today on what you really want instead of settling for something you dont. It ultimately costs you more in the end. I've had to buy my stuff in 3 phases now, the 3rd phase as yet incomplete. But I can rest assured that the end result will be what I wanted.
Like most lines, Focal get better the more you spend. I also liked the sound of Audison amps and McIntosh if you can afford it. Though McIntosh seemed much flatter than I wanted and I wanted flat sound. Also the way they list their wattages seems a little different than other companies. Perhaps theirs are just correct and others are not. But I found the difference between their 100w/ch and 50w/ch amps noticable at the speaker level. Unfortunately the price of their products increases exponentially making that jump also. Which is what drove me back to Focal amps in the end.
As for how to decide what sound you like, I picked my favorite CD that i've been listening for nearly 15 years now and took it with me. I know the main track inside and out and i've listened to it vigorously on many systems including my current Yamaha/Kef and Sennheiser headphones. If you use a track you know well you will be able to hear the difference as they are cycling through the various amps for you. Some are rich, some are bright, some are hollow. Same process with speaker selection.
Good luck, let us know where you end up!
