Yeah, the new Mags are not very happy when pushed beyond 500 watts, but anything above is pure overkill for them and are not at all required, as they are very efficient.

Before jumping into a shallow sub take the time to actually download the spec/installation sheets from the web sites. Compare the actual top mount depth and also what prodrudes from the top, and of course what kind of grill you may use.
For example... a shallow mount sub may claim 3 1/2" top mount depth, but have a 1 inch protruding mounting ring and surround, then you have to add say 1/2 inch of xmax.. for a total of 5 inches of total front to back depth required. Compare this to another non shallow mount sub which may need 4 1/2 inch top mount depth plus 1/2 for mountiing ring and surround plus 1/2 xmax for a total of 5 1/2 inch total front to back mounting depth! Not much of a difference!

I bought a JL 13TW5 back in June and it has been perfect! I have an Alpine PDX 1.600 powering it and it gets pretty damn loud. The SQ is also amazing! I installed mine in my 08 F150 and built the box to the max amount of space I had available under the seats and somehow everything worked out great haha.

Here are some pics.
Please ignore the shitty carpeting job hah, my friend did that and i'm going to redo it!

Not the cheapest shallow sub, but IMO one of the best sounding I've ever heard.

you want a cheap shallow mount to see if you like; i've heard some good things about elemental designs SQ10.
