Best Sound Board In GTA?

I've installed a system in my truck with less than stellar results.

Something is seriously not working with this so I'd like to go preview some speakers. I live in Kingston so I've never been to any shops in the GTA but I need to get this thing sorted out.

Great forum btw!:appl:

Killer_klown187 04-04-2010 10:55 AM

you have some GREAT gear here,
soo I am assuming its all in the install...

sriskie 04-04-2010 11:37 AM

I made the same assumption too so I started a thread diymobileaudio under the Dumb Question forum entittled CDT Reinstall?

Sorry I can't post the link yet, it says I need 5 posts first.

Killer_klown187 04-04-2010 12:16 PM

yes, you need 5 posts,

well placement and setup is crucial using high end stuff...Even the low end CDT's have impressed me!!
Maybe the installer did something wrong?

sriskie 04-04-2010 01:47 PM

I'm the installer and that was my first idea too. Now I'm starting to have doubts if this could be corrected.

Killer_klown187 04-04-2010 02:47 PM

Ahh try different things with your install? Before you go and drop a lot more money when it could just be something resolvable?

sriskie 04-04-2010 03:16 PM

That's what I was hoping. Admittedly I don't really know what I'm doing, I'm just winging it. Some expert advice would surely be appretiated. I would like to take it to someone to have a listen and point me in the right direction. Is it possible the amp is damadged just enough to screw with the sq?

sriskie 04-04-2010 03:19 PM

5 posts!!!

Try this link for more details of the install. Does it bring to mind any solutions?

**Edit - even with 5 posts you should not link to other forums. Thank you for understanding.**

Rob 04-04-2010 10:31 PM

Get or try a higherend headunit. Those newer Alpines arent that great !

Your speakers and install seem fine.

sriskie 04-06-2010 03:10 AM

Really??? I consider this a pretty basic set up and I've never thought of the head unit as the weakest link.

On the other forum, one member suggested that I try switching the phasing one speaker at a time. When I put my ear up to each individual speaker the sound isn't very clean so I'm thinking it has to be something more serious than that.

So, back to my original question. Where's the best place to go to audition a bunch of different speakers in the GTA? I have to have some bad gear somewhere and need to get this sorted out. Is there someone who can listen to what I have and give me some solid advice?

Killer_klown187 04-06-2010 07:28 AM

what is your wiring situation? how are the fronts all hooked up?

Killer_klown187 04-06-2010 07:31 AM

and like mentioned on the other forum, you have a huuge gap in your frequencies, which will result in some weirdness..lol

sriskie 04-06-2010 08:42 AM

So you agree changing the phasing around can make a huge difference? Cure distortion? I thought it was done mostly for the sake of imaging. I have run the tweets on the main tweeter hook up but it sounded terrible. I guess I'll try a bunch of different phasing next weekend but I still want to hear some good sound to at least get a bench mark.

Killer_klown187 04-06-2010 09:27 AM

I am not a sq guy by anymeans but I can respect a well done install! And the work put into it for sure!

sriskie 04-07-2010 05:20 AM

So...I'll try changing all the phasing around on Sunday. Saturday, road trip to Custom Audio Radio and Selective Sound. Any other suggestions?

Call ahead to custom...cause I think they are closed on weekends:bs:

AAAAAAA 04-07-2010 09:55 AM

Can you explain what is wrong with your sound? Is the sub playing fine or is just your components that sound bad... or aren't getting loud enough?

Any pics of how you installed the speaker?

sriskie 04-07-2010 01:53 PM

The best way to see what I've done so far is to follow the link to diyma I pasted on page 1. I have pics and links to the speakers and amps there.

sriskie 04-07-2010 01:59 PM

Sorry... I just found out that I shouldn't link to other forums...

No pictures that I can link to.

mid in the stock location,

I have a single layer of Dynamat Extreme,

1/2" mdf baffles coated with hard bedliner bolted to the doors with loc-nuts,

foam that came with my old Infinity Kappas on the back of the mid,

4- 5/8" screws attaching the mid to the baffle,

stock grills on the door panels,

tweeter mounted about 8" above the mid on the door panel,

crossovers in the kicks,

12 ga everywhere except from the crossover to the tweet, 16 ga there. I bought the wire at Crappy Tire. It has blue and clear coatings over copper and aluminum wires. I don't know if that's bad to use but I'm starting to wish I'd went with something else...another new project.:stroke:

As for how they sound...not good. I don't really know how to describe it. Flat, tinny, and harsh...is that even possible? A few people have told me "it sounds okay..."I would love to know how an expert would describe it but to me it just sounds cheap. I may not know the difference, thus the road trip to listen to some others. At least check to see if my ears still work.

Oh yeah... if this phasing and tuning thing doesn't work out, I'll be looking for a good used amp that I can compare with the one I'm using. I hope it's not the amp, I really like that amp.

kygreen 04-07-2010 07:14 PM

well fromsquare one id didle around with your eq and stuff on he deck if your not geting any mid bass make sure your low pass and high passes are all okay check and make sure your deck grounding and power are good i guess thaat kind of stuff

sriskie 04-07-2010 07:29 PM

I've tried all of that to the best of my abillity...

AAAAAAA 04-08-2010 07:46 AM

So like it was mentioned in the other thread, make sure you aren't plugging your tweeters in the "imagining" section.

You can try flipping the + and - on just one of your midbases, I suggest the driver side one. So one side in phase, the other out of phase.

Also as mentioned in the other thread, make sure that it is sealed around your speaker on the door. The speaker to your baffle should be sealed, I think it is... you can always use window tape seal for this. Same thing between your wodden baffle and your door... you can just use silicone coaking for that, put some all around to make sure it is sealed. A bad seal really close to the speaker has a nack to make midbase dissapear.

sriskie 04-08-2010 08:23 AM

The amount of mid bass actually seems pretty good...it's more an issue with clarity, smoothness, and detail. I know that sounds contradictry but it's the best I can do. Almost like it's clipping a little though I've tried turning the gains way down.

I've been looking at that CDT amp in the classifieds. I doubt that it would solve any of my issues but DAMN...that looks like a sweet amp.

sriskie 04-08-2010 08:44 AM

Oops...double post.

AAAAAAA 04-08-2010 01:12 PM

Did you plug your teeters back into where they are suppose to go... not in the imagining tweeter slots anymore?

Dukk 04-08-2010 02:12 PM

If you can, try running the mids off of the amp directly, not through the passive crossover. Do they clear up? If so, buy another little amp for the tweeters and go active.

Dukk 04-08-2010 02:15 PM

Actually I just checked your amp link and you're already using a 4ch amp but it sounds like you still have the passive crossover. Why?

Paul is right.

Dukk 04-08-2010 02:19 PM

Ya know... I never get tired of hearing that :D

I have never researched or even concidered going active. I assumed it took more then just a 4 channel amp to do it. Don't I need a different head unit or some kind of processor to do it? Also, wouldn't CDT be able to do a much better job tuning it than a ham fisted noob like me?

Checking bcae...

jarredjoffe 04-08-2010 10:58 PM

Jane and Steeles. there is a McDonalds just past the intersection on Steeles. right before the McDonalds is a audio store. the customer service is very good. he has lots of Rockford and clarion and . and has a wall to test lots of stuff and in different combination

Dukk 04-09-2010 02:19 PM

All you would need to go active is to pick up a 2way+Sub outboard crossover. A Coustic XM5 or XM6 would be perfect, they are cheap used, and a great quality piece.

I checked ou the XM6 manual...my head started to hurt. I'm struggling with a passive install, that might just drive me nuts fiddling with everything.:ohwell:

SPL Inc 04-10-2010 09:54 AM

Go to the Big Blue Box Store in Kingston and ask for Jeff. I can take a listen if you like.

Nah man, don't be intimidated. Preliminary settings are:

Sub: 70-80hz

Midrange: 80-100 high pass to 3500-4000hz low pass

Tweeter: 4000hz

That'll get you in the ball park :)

Denonite 04-10-2010 12:48 PM

^^yep, what he said...active is easy, and so much better. Usually with comps I'll start with the passive's cross over points and slope as listed in the manual (if it's listed) and then adjust to my liking as I listen to the system.

AAAAAAA 04-10-2010 12:54 PM

I may have an active xover to.... although I am not convinced that's the issue.
