Best Way to Fill a Hole

cut a piece of wood 2" larger in both directions than the hole, glue that on from the inside. Cut your new hole and take the piece of wood from it and glue it into the old hole - onto the plate you made. Fill the crack around the plug with something suitable.

I've filled quite a few holes with my method - usually there is a suitable wood scrap lying around and, as indicated, you are making a wood plug roughly the same size as the hole you want to fill so no extra time there [img]graemlins/dunno.gif[/img]

I like Dukks idea, but I would skip the square inside.
Cut a small circle that fits somewhat in the hole, pack a mixture of sawdust and wood glue, and come back to it in 48 hrs. It'll be the strongest part of your box. Try to get it as "perfect" as you can while it's wet, 'cause sanding it after, will only result in low spots around your repair. Use a good trowel.
Fill as necc. to finish.
