Best wood to use for box building
#2
Best wood? I think the "best" material would not be wood at all, rather a more desnse material like marble. When I build really high end home gear it's usually with Arboron (very expensive). When I build speakers that need to look like a piece of furniture I use 3/4" HDF with another layer of 3/4" solid wood on the outside (this is for the face and back of the speakers. For the sides of the units I use 1" HDF and 1/4" veneer.
I have a few pics of some of the home speaekers that I build on my Sounddomain page.

3/4" MDF with a 1/4 inch plywood with a oak/maple or the hardwood of your choice veneer would be great.
For a high performance subwoofer I would try to use 1 inch thick baltic birch plywood.....the MDF joints do not hold up over time in extreme conditions.

I'm looking for a wood that can be buffed up real good. So either a veener that I can glue onto mdf (tricky I imagine), mdf with a veener laminate already (then the tricky part is the corners) or something else I have not thought of...

If I'm not mistaken the worst wood to use would be particle board no? (Can't remember the exact name of it but everytime i mention building a box my dad comes up with the great idea to use the wood thats in his garage which would explode, as I used to use it as a target to shoot pucks at and that ripped it apart, I don't mean dents I mean completely through and broken off and explosion)

^ Iam about the opposite of dukk.. I like MDF cause its cheap..
But rigidity durability and weight give ply the edge IMO... Iam more worried about that in pro and home cabinates that get moved around alot and use MDF for everything else....
