I have Morel Elate 3 way component set. The passive crossover has the ability to have the crossover point between the mid-bass and mid/tweeter hooked up normally, bi-wired, or bi-amplified. If I go bi-amp, does the input have to be actively filtered or does the passive crossover do this for you?

 

The way I understand it......
Either way you need separate amps/amp channels for your different speakers
Bi-wire ~ use the passive X-over ( I did this with my QSDs)
Bi-amp ~ active filtering with-out the use of the passive X-over (the way my system is now)

 

Makes sense...... sort of. Why would they even have this feature when all a person has to do is bypass the passive altogether for the mid-bass driver?

 

I bi-wired my QSDs when I had my old PPI amps with no built in X-overs and no HU X-overs, I was able to send 150w to each tweeter and 200w to each mid-bass and they screamed. My guess is large 2 channel amps 350wpc+ aren't that common but a couple of smaller ones usually come by easier?

 

^ That's bi-amping.

The passives allow you to hook an amp up to the midbass and another up to the mid/tweet. It still uses the passive for frequency direction, ie you don't need external active filters.

Bi-wiring is a fruitless endeavour where you run two sets of speaker wire from one amp to the crossover. Some believe that you should use tiny wire for highs and fat cable for lows.

 

Not all passives are like this,but it has huge gains and worth doing.

 

I tried it out and DUKK is right (as usual). I can use two amps and not have to worry about filtering. It's all done at the crossover. Awesome. Thanks, DUKK.
