Blown Transistor :(
Blown Transistor :(
i blew a transistor in my sony 1400watt amp, i was wondering how i would get another one?i took it apart and you could see that it was the only thing that blew there was brown residue around it. any tips?
Check other things. Rarely is a transistor the only thing to blow. When Transistors blow they usually will take a few resistors and caps with them. More stuff could be blown that you can't see.
I've blown resistors that had little to no visible signs of being blown. I only discovered they were pooched when I tested them with my MM.
I've also blown resistors that burnt up so bad they left burn marks on the capacitors around them.
If you don't have experience replacing transistors, don't try it (unless you're willing to sacrifice the amp for the sake of an experiment - then it can be a good learning tool). If you are more interested in keeping the amp, take it to an electronics repair shop and get them to fix it.

do you have an idea of how much it would cost me? would i be better of buying a new amp? just want to confirm that the amp still lights up, i also heard two pops when i turned up the volume after replacing the fuses in the amp. after that a small amout of smoke.
Sorry, I have no idea about the cost.
My only experience with blown transistors is on amps that I have found in the garbage (a good friend of mine worked in a dump). I have been able to find the problems in the amps, but I haven't been able to fix an amp with blown transistors sucessfully yet. Most often too much other stuff gets messed up and it is more of a head ache than it is worth - that's why I adviced against doing it yourself. I'm reasonably handy with a soldering iron, but I don't have the training to accurately trace down all the possibilities of what else could have blown.
Find a repair shop that does free estimates. They do exist, I've been to a few myself.
