would it be better to use a single piece of 1" mdf for a baffle board or two 1/2" pieces glued together. I have lots of 1/2 mdf laying around and the rest of the box will be 3/4".

If you have the 1/2" already then for sure, laminate it up. Better yet, do 3 layers. It is better to keep laminations to odd numbers. [img]graemlins/thumb.gif[/img]

I'd assume for splitting reasons. With two if you screw in the middle it's between the boards, with 3 when you screw in the middle it hits the middle of the center board.

That makes sense, but it's for a baffle. Which I'm assuming is the sheet where the sub will be mounted?

If you have an object and you bend it, the maximum shear force is in the plane through the middle of it. I would rather have that force through the middle of a sheet then along a glue joint.

I would say the best would be to use 3 diffent thicknesses of MDF. Each has it's own resonant frequency. By using different thicknesses you can decrease the cabinet resonances, which will get you more/cleaner bass.

^ A practice you surely have seen in some home speaker cabinets is varied thickensses for the baffle, back and sides, for this very reason. You don't really decrease the resonances but they get out.

I have also seen and built speakers with particle board laminated to MDF to take advantage of this as well.

Ahhh ok this is all good.

If you have wall with 3 laminated sheets. Say all 3/4"... do you cut out the sub hole in each one first? Or do you usually laminate, then get a big **** jig saw?
