Well free air taken literally does mean no box.
However it useually referes to infinte baffle. By this it means the sub is mounted on a baffle only, no box. This works very well given the proper woofer and setup. It is important to have the back wave completely seperated from the front wave (the air space at the back of the woofer doesn't interfere with the air space in front of the woofer).

Just a little side note. I was just on the Image Dynamics web site and read a thread on there about inverted IDMAX. They do not recomend inverting them as "Mounting the sub in the traditional way rather than inverted will indeed give better spl and sq", "this one has been proven"
