So just the sub sitting there, no box, not inverted? Any one have any install pics of that? I'd like to see some set-ups

Well free air taken literally does mean no box.
However it useually referes to infinte baffle. By this it means the sub is mounted on a baffle only, no box. This works very well given the proper woofer and setup. It is important to have the back wave completely seperated from the front wave (the air space at the back of the woofer doesn't interfere with the air space in front of the woofer).
