buying a deck.................
alright so im giving my dad a new deck for his birthday as his 2001 Jetta only has a tape deck. So anyways as many of u may know the stock speakers are pretty decent components that go loud and clear. But when i get a new deck i dont want these speakers to be underpowered and i dont want to have to spring for a new amp. So whats the most cost effective option for putting in a new deck. Alpine, Sony, Kenwood, Clarion, Panasonic, Blaupunkt, Rockford Fosgate are the available brands (i want him to be able to get it serviced at a local shop as i wont be home to fix it.........) so what do you guys think?

If you want to get him a deck with a little more oomph, get one the Bass Engine Pro decks like the CDA-9811, 9813 or 9815. Go see Scott or Jason over at Fast Forward, they'll help you out.

granted I'm pretty new to this car audio thing, but here are my experiences.
When I was setting up my sister's stereo, we tried a good number of aftermarket decks using only the internal amp. Her first one was a low-mid end Alpine that she bought a year ago (it was a 2002 model), I think the label on it said 45w/ch. She wanted the volume to be clearer at higher volumes with less distortion, so that was sold (note, all four speakers are decent aftermarket coax). What followed was a JVC from Futureshop, a Sony from best buy with the blacked out flip face, and a Pioneer. Don't ask me for the model #'s because I don't remember them, but all of them were purchased for around $350-400 before taxes. All were returned
She now has a Clarion 9575rz sending signal to a OLD POS Audiovox amp (so old, it has a picture of a cheap tape deck on the back) that I picked up for $20 off E-bay. This setup cost half the price of the above mentioned decks (though granted the Clarion was bought used at a killer price) and easily sounds twice as good. The volume can go considerably louder before distorting and the music has a much richer, more detailed sound to it at moderate levels.
For my money, I'd say that you would be better off getting a lower end unit with three pre-outs and spend the saved money on an amp. Then again, maybe that Alpine might be worthwhile [img]graemlins/dunno.gif[/img]

thanks for the advice... on the blaupunkt how is the actual power output? I know that the have some high ratings but what does that boil down to in true RMS? Id love to do a nice 4ch amp and maybe a single shiva or something in his car to give him a really nice sound. But I fear since I wont be there to help him if something screws up. I am stuck using the kiss principle on this one... I will go and look at the alpines.. As for fast forward the list of scams and BS stunts they have pulled is as long as the list of favourable comments.. bur perhaps Ill give them another chance. I have always been a sony(yes i like their decks so bugger off!!) / clarion fan myself and outside of their decks I dont know a whole lot. THanks for the advice.. More is always welcome!
